http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/6791/mayweather-pacquiao-a-pipe-dream

When the WBC released its December rankings last week (pretty bad ones, as usual), suddenly my Twitter timeline lit up about it for one simple reason.

The organization had ranked Manny Pacquiao, who came off a one-year layoff to dominate Brandon Rios on Nov. 23, No. 1 at welterweight. As it happens, Floyd Mayweather Jr. holds that organization's title, meaning that Pacquiao will be named Mayweather’s mandatory challenger.

The questions poured in on the topic and they all went something like this -- "Now that Pacquiao is going to be the mandatory does that mean they will finally fight?" I am here to crush and destroy all of your hopes and dreams.

The answer is unequivocally no.

If Mayweather and Pacquiao do someday fight -- and I am as skeptical as anyone after all the nonsense that has gone on over the past few years as this wretched soap opera has dragged on -- it will have nothing whatsoever to do with a belt.

If they fight it will be because they all have come to their senses and made the fight. But nobody is going to force either side into, least of all the WBC.

In normal boxing, when a titleholder is ordered to make a mandatory defense, the camps negotiate and make a deal. If they can’t make a deal the organization orders a purse bid and the promoter that bids the most at the auction wins the promotional rights to the fight with the purse amount offered being split between the titleholder and the challenger, usually on a 70-30 split in the case of the WBC. The organization also has the latitude to change the split depending on other factors, such as the name value of the challenger.

But don’t worry about that in relation to a Mayweather-Pacquiao mandatory. It won’t matter.

Neither fighter is going to be forced into the fight by a sanctioning body. Do you think for one minute that Mayweather would even participate in a purse bid and risk losing control of the fight? Zero chance.

Nobody is going to tell Mayweather whom he has to fight. As he says, he's his own boss. He picks his opponents. Pacquiao does the same thing.

If Mayweather is ordered to fight the mandatory it will mean nothing because he will dump the title in my view. He doesn’t need the title whatsoever (and, by the way, he still holds two others at junior middleweight).

Nobody buys a Mayweather fight because he has a title. And if Mayweather drops the title he actually would save money because there would be no sanctioning fee to pay.

Likewise with Pacquiao, who, like Mayweather, already has a closet full of belts. If he ever faces Mayweather it's not going to be because some organization ordered him to do so.

If Mayweather and Pacquiao haven't listened to the fans begging them to fight for all of these years, what makes anyone think they’ll listen to the WBC?

They won't, which is why Pacquiao's No. 1 challenger ranking is nothing but symbolic.

and thats what I have been saying all along. its a media ploy. this fight isnt any closer to fruition than it was in the past
I agree, this is about the Mayweather stooping to Manny's level and choosing to fight in the court of public opinion, HBO and ESPN who works in conjunction with HBO will never say anything bad about Manny while vilifying Mayweather even all the shyt regarding Manny recently they are mum on. This is simply a move to embarrass Manny in the court of public opinion and if the fight comes off from it unexpectedly than why not:manny:

If Manny ducks a Mayweather fight regardless of a PR stunt, he's done

HBO, Showtime Split Ratings Audience on December 7th
For boxing junkies who can’t watch the sport enough, the weekend’s action between December 6–7 proved to be an overload.

From a ratings perspective, it also proved that perhaps there is such a thing as too much boxing.

HBO and Showtime both provided loaded shows over the weekend, splitting the boxing audience nearly in half with conflicting telecasts. HBO’s live televised tripleheader from Atlantic City won the head-to-head battle, with an average of 518,000 viewers over the course of the telecast edging out Showtime’s quadrupleheader from Brooklyn, which managed an average of 489,000 viewers throughout its near four-hour telecast.

ormer middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik has been accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Youngstown (Ohio) Vindicator.

Police responded early Monday morning to a report of a potentially impaired driver on the Ohio Turnpike.

“A trooper spotted Pavlik’s car at the gate trying to exit the turnpike, but Pavlik did not have a pass or ticket on him to exit the toll road,” said the newspaper report, citing police. “As the trooper questioned Pavlik, he showed signs that he was impaired.”

Pavlik refused a breath test but “was still cited because the trooper had probable cause to believe Pavlik was drunk.”

That was 12:25 a.m. At 2:04 a.m. on Monday, Pavlik posted this on his Facebook page:

“f*** i got got again lol”

Later that day, at 5:17 p.m., he added this:

“so we in society can say u can't drink and drive, but you can sell a 24 pack and have beers places, gas stations and everywhere else that sell beer yet if u get pulled over for 2 beers in your system ur f***ed, should we not do the same for a 400 pound women or man that eats cheese burgers and french fries and orders a diet coke, and drive knowing he has high blood pressure and cholesterol”

Pavlik was already facing minor criminal charges for allegedly refusing to pay a taxi driver $25 after a ride home from an Ohio bar in September. A hearing in that case had been scheduled for Dec. 6 but has been postponed to Jan. 31, the newspaper reported.

In December 2011, Pavlik was accused of driving under the influence after allegedly crashing an all-terrain vehicle into a lamp post and telephone pole, according to past reports on this site.

“He pleaded guilty in April 2012 … to a reduced charge of failure to control,” the Vindicator reported. “He has attended a treatment program.”

The 31-year-old retired earlier this year after a planned fight with Andre Ward was postponed due to Ward suffering an injury in training camp. His last bout was in July 2012, a decision win over Will Rosinsky. That brought his record to 40-2 with 34 knockouts.

Manny Pacquiao’s Money Problems Can’t Be Solved With Floyd Mayweather Fight

Manny Pacquiao has had financial problems of some sort for years. They have never officially been confirmed by the Filipino star, but given how many different directions they come from, and taking into account that they span multiple continents, it’s probably safe to say where this is smoke there is fire. Most of these issues, thus far at least, have had to do with taxes.

According to a new report from TMZ, Pacquiao has allegedly stiffed the IRS for $18 million in payments. The breakdown, they say, is as follows: $1.1 million in 2006, $2 million in 2007, $2.8 million in 2008, 8 million in 2009, and $4.2 million in 2010.

This of course is on top of what officials in the Philippines are seeking.

Pacquiao’s apparent need to make some fast money has led folks to speculate that he may now be more interested in a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Unfortunately, those two things have nothing to do with each other.

Mayweather has made it abundantly clear that he has no interest in giving Pacquiao any pay-per-view dough. At best, the Filipino star will walk away from a showdown against Mayweather with a $40 million fixed amount. Maybe. However, unless Mayweather budges on PPV split, it may actually be more financially lucrative for Pacquiao to fight Juan Manuel Marquez for a fifth time.

It’s true that Pacquiao probably wants a big pay day right now. And it’s true that a bout against Mayweather would leave him a reasonably decent check. But unless Mayweather offers some leeway on PPV split, it’s unlikely that all involved will go down that road.

I remember he had one of his fights canceled because he "cut his hand" that's alcoholic for he got mad at his girl and punched through a window. Never change Kelly, never change.
