Joe Goossen on Working With Frank Sanchez: 'He Was a Byproduct of The Ryan Garcia Scenario'

BY SEAN NAM

Joe Goossen evidently got more than Ryan Garcia when the lightweight attraction decided to link up with the respected trainer earlier this year.

Goossen also eventually became the charge of Frank Sanchez, the 29-year-old, undefeated Cuban heavyweight contender. Like Garcia, Sanchez was a former mentee of Eddy Reynoso, the head trainer of undisputed 168-pound champion Canelo Alvarez and former two-division titlist Oscar Valdez.

Garcia sparked headlines in February when he decided to leave Reynoso, regarded as one of the top trainers in the sport, ahead of Garcia’s scheduled bout with Emmanuel Tagoe of Ghana. It was a surprising move because the partnership was generally thought of as a success, with all five of Garcia’s fights under Reynoso coming by way of stoppage. Reynoso is based in San Diego, where he runs a gym.

Garcia won an uneventful 12-round decision over Tagoe in April at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Under Reynoso, Sanchez picked up arguably the best win of his career thus far, a dominant points win over Efe Ajagba last October.

Goossen opened up recently about how Sanchez landed in his stable, saying that the fact that Sanchez shares the same manager as Garcia – Lupe Valencia – was the impetus for the change.

“Frank Sanchez is a byproduct of the Ryan Garcia scenario because Lupe Valencia is his manager as well,” Goossen said on The 3 Knockdown Rule on Triller. “Henry Garcia, Ryan’s dad, works with Frank as well up in San Diego. So now Frank is at my gym as well.”

Goossen trains his fighters out of the Ten Goose Boxing Gym in Van Nuys, just north of Los Angeles, where Sanchez has joined a heavyweight-rich stable. Goossen hopes to have his first ring outing with Sanchez in July.

“So between Chris Arreola, who’s going to be fighting in August, Frank Sanchez, who is going to be fighting I believe in early July, and then I’ve got Geovany Bruzón out of Cuba. And one of my favorites is a fighter from the Olympic team over in Armenia, Gurgen Hovhannisyan, 6’6”, 280 [pounds].

“I’ve got four heavyweights and Ryan, five guys, but I give a lot of time to each guy individually. Like I say I’ve got no complaints at all.”

Not sure if this has been posted yet. Apparently Andy Cruz has defected from Cuba and is on his way to the Salas Academy. Damn!

If this is true and happens, look out. Andy Cruz with Salas and Larry Wade is an instant contender at 135. Cruz looks like he hasn’t touched a dumbell in his life. Look at what Salas and Wade did with Romero.

I always felt that was harsh criticism. Montiel fought like this was his last chance. He is awkward and Charlo was trying too hard to get the KO. Outside of a few shakey moments, it wasn’t that bad.
nah he deserved every bit of it.....montiel was brought in because kirkland proved to be too shot to handle something like him...montiel is not a rated fighter...he should have been bodied..instead mall ended up with a fukked up hand and trademarked eye going the distance..you gotta be able to crush a can if youre somebody with mall's skills

Beterbiev reminds me of a prime Ike Quartey. Before you laugh lol I'm comparing the mental & physical pressure he puts on fighters in the ring. Where you can see fighters panic or immediately change game plans because of that pressure & that they're right on you till they get you out of there

Boxing Heads .. Question:

How long has J. Prince been in boxing? and how does his reputation compare to those like Kinahan or Don King ,, as the "behind the scenes gangsters of boxing?"

------

So I was watching Floyd vs Augustus highlights ,, at the beginning of the video they say Floyd just signed J. Prince as his new manager ..

I've only heard of J. Prince recently because of random rap beefs .. I never knew he was this deep in the managerial business especially boxing

I came across an interesting article about a "beef" between Floyd and J. Prince ..

J. Prince-Floyd Mayweather beef: The violent history between the boxing legend and his former manager

To quote Bob Arum from the article;

"We were at dinner one night and I got a call that there was a disturbance in my gym. Floyd apparently had asked us not to do a fight in October but to do it in December after James Prince's contract with him had run out.
The disturbance in my gym was that some people came over, with or without the knowledge of James Prince, and proceeded to break a couple of heads of people in Mayweather's camp with baseball bats. So the gym was splattered with blood.
Floyd came to my office the next day and he said, 'Prince wants his money from the fight that's coming up.' I said, 'Fine, if that's what you want. I'll write him a letter of credit.' Floyd said, 'Prince don't do no letters of credit. You better send the cash.'
So I wrote a check, and I made a contract with Prince's lawyer and he got paid the money that he said he was entitled to as Floyd's manager."

Can yall fill me in on the lore of J. Prince cuz I never heard of the guy til recently .. Just how bad of a man is he really and how deep is he into boxing
