I think the Academy has no idea of the shytstorm it started with the snub of Ava DuVernay and to a lesser extent Angelina Jolie in the Best Director category.
Not adding a woman to the best Director sausage party when there was an opportunity to include DuVernay, Jolie or even Amma Assante (another female director of color) for Belle which was very well reviewed.

Jolie absolutely has no place in that category. None! Unbroken was a movie dying for a director with a better handle on filmmaking. So much wasted potential in that movie.

Yup. That's all they're going to be hearing for the next month. Then if the show bombs ratings wise, watch them overcompensate next year. It's crazy though in a year with so many stories about women or made by women or about minorities, none of them are really represented to the fullest extent, especially since last year those voices represented real life events

I'm not saying she should have won but there were a handful of female directors this year that could have been chosen and to not select at least one of them is just a PR disaster when it comes to an entity that is still criticized for its lack of diversity.
And I agree that Unbroken was lackluster and Jolie took on a property that was more than she was ready to handle. I am curious to see what she could do with a straight up action movie though.

One article I just read talked about the academy's continuing problem of recognizing female directors

We also learned that the Hobbit trilogy was officially a bust, since the franchise’s most CG-filled entry didn’t even land a Best Visual Effects nomination. Honestly, the CG work in The Battle of the Five Armies veered on the cartoony side at times. I don’t know if it was the HFR snafu or what, but the awe and wonder that The Lord of the Rings instilled was just completely gone, despite technology

having advanced significantly in the interim. A far cry from the 13-Oscar clean sweep that Return of the King enjoyed a decade ago.

Yeah breh, I know. That battle of the five armies is terrible. Shame Jackson couldn't elevate this trilogy to the level of the first

Wait till the angry feminist bloggers and magazine writers get going. The Oscars are going to get ripped apart.

They already are. EW's opening line in their article is, "Well, it’s certainly going to be one white male Oscars."

And there's a lot of head scratching as to why Ava and David weren't nominated, and thankfully, some outrage.

And the cognitive dissonance within the Academy that sees Bennett Miller getting a Best Director nod while Foxcatcher isn't nominated for Best Picture is really bewildering.
i get that the directors branch votes on the Best Director noms but come on...there should not be that big a disparity that one branch thinks a director is deserving of a nomination but the rest of the academy has no love for the film the guy directed when they have up to 10 slots to fill for Best Picture.

I keep putting off watching American Sniper just because of how huge a piece of shyt lying douchebag Chris Kyle was in real life and the idea of a sanitized version of the man put on screen to look like some sort of American Hero is just distasteful to me.
If Eastwood and Cooper had made a movie about the real severely flawed Chris Kyle I think they would have had a more appealing film.
