Gone Girl should at least get a nomination. I don't think it would be the favorite with Boyhood cleaning up everything in sight but you got 10 slots, throw Gone Girl in there, why not?
Because Gone Girl might sneak in and win then. Now, we all know either Boyhood, Grand budapest or Birdman will win

They didn't hoe LBJ but that's a different discussion for the selma thread and I've already gone into what I think about it and some others have as well. And his portrayal has nothing to do with David and Ava not getting any love, that's just mind boggling to me. I could see if dude was bad playing MLK then by all means, leave him out; I don't want him to be nominated just because he's black and just because he's playing MLK. But since he was pitch perfect and did a hell of a job, it's definitely a snub.
I just think Paramount did a crappy job...again. Les Moonves been dropping the ball too much when it comes this for a while now.

Huffington Post said this: Come out in November, not December :ehh:

And I don't think it would win. There was an LA times article written back in October saying that oscar voters greet Gone Girl with a shrug

Yeah, any time before december is good. Sounds like December - January - February is a dumping ground for film. I thought the Oscars would like to get more original

I've seen Ida and Leviathan and would rate both 3.5/5, although Ida had me leaning towards a 4/5 as well. Leviathan is pretty much the umpteenth modern take on the Book of Job, and probably owns a lot of its hype due to its heavy criticism of the Russian government and focus on corruption. Ida has a straight forward story that's littered with subtleties, but most of its credit goes to beautiful imagery and the smart choice to film it in a very tight 4:3 aspect ratio.

Of the other movies I'm only a bit familiar with Timbuktu which did quite well at Cannes.

I think the Academy has no idea of the shytstorm it started with the snub of Ava DuVernay and to a lesser extent Angelina Jolie in the Best Director category.
Not adding a woman to the best Director sausage party when there was an opportunity to include DuVernay, Jolie or even Amma Assante (another female director of color) for Belle which was very well reviewed.
