what's the fascination with obi toppin?

bruh is the most stiff player ive ever seen. even his athletic plays are stiff. let me find out he's another kevin knox :picard:
He’s probably better off as a stretch 5, but offensively there’s nothing wrong with him.

That was their rationale, not mine. I personally like Ball, but he has too many deficiencies to suddenly become an efficient player. He's a project for sure.

The Wolves have been terrible for so long (besides that one season with Jimmy recently) and I don't think any of these guys will suddenly turn them into contenders.

If they like him and KAT likes him, he's theirs.
Edwards has a lot of support if that team stays there

What if you don't think he'll be trash but also don't think he'll be a franchise player? :jbhmm:
Does he have to be a “franchise player”?

U don’t think he can be an All-Star? I think he’s gonna be a hybrid of Shaun Livingston and Jason Williams.

If you’re drafting someone first overall, that’s a baseline expectation with franchise player being something that should be remotely capable within you. I’m of the belief that a franchise player isn’t in this draft and the odds of finding one can be spread out anywhere from 1-20. There’s players at 17 I like as much if not more than Ball and Edwards.

You have to reduce this draft to fit and whether a player has a ++ skill. LaMelo is pretty wack at a lot of things, but passing ain’t one of them. That should give him an edge over Edwards in theory.

Who said he has to be a franchise player? It was just the opposite extreme of him being trash/undrafted.

Meh. I'm not convinced a Shaun Livingston/Jason Williams hybrid is an All-Star, unless we're talking a Jeff Teague type selection :manny:

isnt he also one of the older dudes in the draft? does that limit his ceiling?

id be curious to see data on 22+ year olds drafted top 5

Especially as a big. Wouldn’t mind drafting a 22 year old guard but a 22 year old big who’s overpowering little boys in college that is horrendous on defense and also doesn’t take perimeter shots mainly because he could just bully everyone else is pretty scary.

In the one-and-done era (2006-now)

Adam Morrison* (Turned 22 a month after the draft)
Shelden Williams
Hasheem Thabeet
Wesley Johnson
Kris Dunn

Ugly list but in fairness though: Brandon Roy, Damian Lillard & Buddy Hield all went 6th

whatever he offers on offense is becoming dime a dozen around the league too. he'll likely never have offense run for him, you have to be a big of quality like AD, Jokic, Embiid for that to be drawn into current offenses that prioritize full spacing. he'll be asked to be on the perimeter a bunch playing next to centers, even if he can produce as a catch and shoot PF, like I said, thats a dime a dozen trait now you can get role players to fill and offer similar quality of defense

i dont know much about this years prospects this year BTW - so Im not really qualified to fully grade these players. Im just saying the full 'theory' of Toppin, even fully realized, isnt something that adds as much value in todays NBA IMO

yeah, scary list. and in reference to the group of guys drafted at #6, all guards that this league caters to heavily now

Id assume Obi is in top 5 talks largely as a product of this being considered a weak draft?

I would think that a weaker draft than usual plays a big part. For reference, Rui Hachimura went 9th last year and I feel like most would agree that he was a better prospect than Toppin.

Recent history hasn’t been kind to guys his age. That’s partially why I think the Jamison comparison makes sense.

that and he was without question the best player in college this year. Nobody on that list can lay claim to that except maybe Morrison.

Obi at best is Antawn Jamison.

To me he's like a lesser version of John Collins or a more athletic Bobby Portis

A good scoring backup big is his best role

Not a fan of LaMelo....he wont be trash but I dont see him being an Allstar either. Taller Jason Williams maybe. Just being a flashy passer isnt enough to justify #1. I think tall PGs are overrated too....I'll take a 6'3" who can shoot lights out and get to the rim. I can see Ball just being a better MCW

yep thats a good parallel and id be curious to think when he would have gone last draft. maybe where Culver went to Wolves but if not there, possibly later lottery like youre saying with Rui going 9

But look at Jamison’s career. Having Jamison’s trajectory might be good enough to be the best player among this group of guys.
