If you say that LaMelo has a high ceiling, then you can say it about literally anyone else who's eligible for a draft though. Just ignore everything negative and say that it actually represents limitless growth potential.
He shot 25% from 3 - and he shoots at a high volume because he's literally afraid of actually playing out a whole possession against a defense that's set up to meet him middle schoolers do that shyt. Not elite playmaking point guards. Dude is throwing passes that a LOT of people can make in scrimmages and low end leagues.
He 6'7 and frail with average as fukk explosion. Doesn't even know what to do offensively between the paint and 3 point line aside from throw up sad floaters.
He either can't play defense except once every 10 minutes of floor time or flat out refuses to do so. Never heard of off-ball play either.
If it wasn't for Lonzo and Lavar, nobody would be paying attention to some kid who went from AAU to Lithuania to the JBA to Australia.
That's a big ongoing issue with him and it's stuck since he's been in AAU. He's a fearless passer, but those passes won't be there once defenses dare him to shoot. If he can't figure that out in the NBL, how is he going to figure it out against NBA defenses? A lot hinges on him fixing his shot and reigning in his shot selection.
It even speaks volumes about this draft when a project like him is discussed as a "no brainer" at #1.
