HHH being punished is more of a myth than fact. Vince Russo was the only person who saw him as a major player. Everyone else saw him as a mid carder. Austin was already gaining steam before his King of the Ring victory speech and WCW would've still been in trouble because of all of the politics and Time Warner not wanting it.
Doesn't matter if Cripple H was punished..he was a utter nobody in 96 and 97. Scott Hall acting like the WWF invaded WCW changed pro wrestling..the WWF didn't get hot until the Tyson /Austin confrontation made it on Sportscenter Rumble 98.

Screwjob is the most talked about

screwjob is more of an incident rather than an important match.

and truth be told, it wasnt THAT big of a deal in real-time. the internet just became obsessed with it around the time wrestling docs started poppin, and it took on a whole new life from there.

it belongs in the same boat as the curtain call.

I dunno, breh... HHH spent the summer doin lots of jobs and wasn't on any PPVs... mf even lost to The Stalker  the punishment didn't last forever of course but he definitely was grounded for about three months. It was way different than what it would have been if he had won KOTR... but in hindsight, good thing he didn't :manny:

Low-key might be Bret/Taker at Summerslam. Kicked off the Taker/HBK feud which birthed HIAC & Kane. HBK winning led to him facing Bret at SS which led to the screwjob. The screwjob led to the ‘Bret screwed Bret’ promo on Raw which birthed the Mr McMahon character. HBK dropped the belt to Austin at WM which led to the Austin/Mcmahon feud and the rest is history.

Bret/Taker Taker/HBK is an extension/fallout of Austin/Bret tbh.

Austin brings the Hart Foundation together which brings HBK in which in turns causes the whole Face/Heel switching when in America to Canada and vice versa. Which ends up the SSlam match has a stipulation of not wrestling in America if Bret loses and HBK attacks Bret etc.

Austin wasn't gaining steam before KOTR. The month prior he was having a strap match with Savio Vega which he lost and getting the Million $ Man bushed that was b2b PPV losses. The only one who had momentum going into the KOTR was Marc Mero.

The only 2 things on Austin's side was Jake the Snake was part of creative. And Bret continued to praise him to Vince while on his break.

So did Jim Ross. He had people in the WWF who saw his talent. Hunter didn't. All he had was his but buddy HBK. No one else saw anything special in him. There's a reason why they had Austin ditch DiBiase and the Ring Master gimmick.
