As odd as it sounds, the answer imo is Booker T vs Buff Bagwell on Raw after the wcw purchase.

If that match went well, the crowd responded, and was executed well, according to everyone involved, Vince was committed to making an entire wcw tv show and turning raw or smackdown into Nitro. It killed one of the biggest changes in wwf history from happening, and terminated a WWECW type wcw show from starting.

Hogan vs. Sheik when Hogan won his first WWE title. That's what started the ball rolling, and kept it moving through to today

I gotta go with Rock/Hogan. That match was just different.

Kansas City, MO.
1) Hogan/Andre...it was like the signature WWE type of feud for decades. The big muscular babyface vs a monster.
2) Bret/Austin...the double switch launched Austin into the stratosphere and redefined heels and faces.

The screw job helped create heel Vince McMahon which lead to the attitude era. Without the attitude era it’s hard to think WCW folds even with their glaring issues.
It made the inevitable come faster.

10 years later Hogan and Bischoff destroyed TNA when WWE was very boring. WCW wasn't gonna last long when it was all about what Hogan wanted. They were too clueless to realize what a great roster they had.

i think The Rock vs HHH ladder match at Summerslam 98 was the most important match of both wrestlers careers, turned em both into main eventers

Low-key might be Bret/Taker at Summerslam. Kicked off the Taker/HBK feud which birthed HIAC & Kane. HBK winning led to him facing Bret at SS which led to the screwjob. The screwjob led to the ‘Bret screwed Bret’ promo on Raw which birthed the Mr McMahon character. HBK dropped the belt to Austin at WM which led to the Austin/Mcmahon feud and the rest is history.
And all that was set up because HBK refused to drop the strap to Bret at WM13. That set up the fatal 4 way cage match for the title, Taker winning it at WM13, Austin vs Bret at WM13, the Bret Hart heel turn. So not only can it be argued that Montreal Screw Job is the most important match in WWF/WWE history it can be argued that the "I lost my smile" promo is the most important promo in company history.
