This is a strong contender. it's my understanding that Vince really went all-in financially on Wrestlemania 1 and that if it failed, we might not be watching WWE today. Gotta be some of the highest stakes on any match.

Also brought wrestling into the mainstream

I mean obviously fukk hogan forever but we’re kidding ourselves if you don’t name that match as most important in WWE history in my opinion. We can trace all the attitude era stuff back to this or that moment but the image of hogan slamming Andre is basically the jerry west logo of WWE.

most of the matches being mentioned werent important at all in real-time.

also, the WWE was around for like 50 years before 1997.

Austin beating HBK at WM 14 literally kickstarted the Attitude Era and changed EVERYTHING!!!!
Scott hall showing up in WCW..the bash at the beach 96 match was bigger than of all that. Now Tyson/Austin after Rumble 98 was huge. Shawn Michaels is a sissy so he damn sure didnt change the business except for when he helped McMahon set up Bret.

Too many important matches but one incident was just as important as some of the matches listed and that was the "curtain call" in MSG.

If that doesn't happen

-Triple H isn't punished and wins KoTR that year not Austin
-Austin 3:16 is never born
-We likely don't get the attitude era because Austin wouldn't be as over
-WCW probably would have won the war because of it

It's definitely interesting to think about.

HHH being punished is more of a myth than fact. Vince Russo was the only person who saw him as a major player. Everyone else saw him as a mid carder. Austin was already gaining steam before his King of the Ring victory speech and WCW would've still been in trouble because of all of the politics and Time Warner not wanting it.
