Ranking is hard but ill give you some cities I have above ATL

-Louisiana in general but ill say NOLA
-Savana GA
-Charleston
-Houston
-Miami (Soulfood + Latin + Afro caribean)

Mind you, Ive spent more time in ATL than all of these cities combined and I find ATL's food scene to be a gimmicky and repetitive. AND.. the soul food in general seems a bit watered down in comparison to aforementioned cites or places like Mississippi, Memphis ETC. too much copy paste seafood boils, wing spots. The places that are trying to be "trendy" and experimental don't do that well. I really don't find that culinary identity/soul in ATL the way that the south in general has it. Ive never been anywhere where people hype more restaurants that are mediocre to me.
I remember your travels and post so figured your really researched it.

Research being traveling to any noteworthy American city and 18 different countries meticulously searching for the best (not most popular) food a place can offer.

It's subjective but ATL is not a place I go to looking forward to the cuisine. And I don't know any transplants in from other southern states that say the food in ATL is better than where they from.

Chicago
Uhh nah, it’s a high end steak place, you can do a Cajun boil at anyone of the numerous Juicy Crab knockoffs around town
Hmm, there’s a Low Country here in Chicago that is a seafood boil. Perhaps it’s unrelated.

with ease. the ocean is right there so we not even going to debate fresh seafood. plus you could take one street through cuban, Haitian and American enclaves. Then you got Bahamian, jamaican, Trinidadian. Miami is a global culinary hub

LIke i said before ATL is mid as fukk for a city it tries to be. The food doesnt suck but there isnt something in Atl they do better than anywhere else besides maybe hot wings and that isnt real food.

There are cities with trash food and Atl food def isnt trash but its literally nothing memorable.

Can you elaborate on “gimmicky” and “repetitive”? I respectfully disagree with your list but want to get your thoughts on the ATL dining scene
infinite surface level "Caribbean" food (jerk chicken + waffles), boil spots, wing spots, "crack dust" on chicken, "trap" themed chicken spots and soul food that often does not impress me.

Then when you try to get into their Michelen star aspiring joints, most of them miss the mark for me. An example of a restaurant that impressed me in ATL like I said before Yebo beach house was excellent but I find it to be a rarity that ATL pulls it off on that level. I could name 20 spots in Williamsburg/fort Greene alone that pulls of "ethnic" cuisine on that level

Surprised i didnt see this thread until today.

Currently in the A visiting my girl for Spelman’s homecoming and even though this is my first time in ‘Lanta… im surprised there are so many white folks here (nothing wrong with that, bit wiki claims that the AA community supposed to represent slightly over 50 percent *shrugs*)

Prolly tourists, too, but damn. Gentrification is a real as fidduck.

Us ethnic folk cant have shiit anymore.

And fukk a michelin rating. Stick to making my rubber shoes ya bish!

ATL to MEM
True, Atlas was a favorite of mine b/c of the art/decor and food but them portions small asf :mjlol: I thought that shyt was a joke but one bite run you about $30

Surprised Nobu didn’t get a star, probably my favorite new sushi spot b/w them and Umi :ohlawd:

Garden Room is my favorite little meeting spot in the city, grab a drink, enjoy the scenery and chop it up.

Lobster tails at Chops :banderas:

Did Garden Room stop with that food minimum bullshyt? I never went because of that.

Of course the ATL
Good post

What is exactly is Atlanta's culinary identity?

The city has gotten tremendously more diverse over the past 15 years with unique identities throughout the metro. If I had to specify one emerging trend, it’s a New South (reimagined take on classic Southern/American dishes). Miller Union has mastered it and they do it with a focus on sustainable farming and local produce

I think anyone saying there’s restaurants that are on the map here b/c of social media either aren’t paying attention or don’t know what they’re taking about

If you’re coming to Atlanta and spending your time going to surface level wing and vibe spots then you’re not really going to find great diversity of options.

BTW, this was the first yr we had Michelin rate our restaurants which point to how the restaurant scene in Atlanta has elevated over the past 15 years.

It kinda feels like you went to Juicy Crab and “insert hookah bar/Sunday brunch spot” and formed your opinion based off of that
