My cousin is going to begin Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) aka Electro Shock Therapy tomorrow, due to his major depression, and several suicide attempts. Has anyone here had this procedure done, or had someone close to them do it?
Wanted to know what are the pros and cons, or what he should expect.
Wow. I've looked into this before as a lot of famous writers have taken this treatment.
It is comparable to botox, in that it will have scheduled treatments throughout the year. Depending on the duration of effects on the person, they can last from 3 weeks to several months post-ECT. It is generally combined with previous medicines for a complete program while in-between ECT sessions.
Side-effects include memory loss, waking up with the anesthesia feeling, nausea, headaches, etc.
A swing of moods and personality to the baseline. He may be returned to 'normal,' as this is the most effective procedure concerning depression. That said, there is no guarantee and it reminds me of the trauma reset, I'm not remembering the psychology term here. Essentially, traumatic events and psychological suggestion can be reset by undergoing another traumatic event. It can also swing the other way. There is a Skinner's box paper that details this.
The treatment's intent is to remove the fog so he can use the medicine as his only crutch.
Has your cousin been diagnosed as a type of bipolar? I'm assuming this will be done at the city hospital, does he have insurance to cover the procedure?
Also, he'll need an escort post-treatment if he doesn't have one already.
