Listen it's not like Joel had a whole lot of time to consider what was going on.
For one, the patrols specifically look for survivors.
Two he found her trapped as a hoard of zombies started chasing them.
Is it in Joels character to go "you know she might be bad let's leave her there to die just in case" ?
That doesn't feel like Joel to me.
Then they get trapped by the hoard behind a barrier that's about to break. There is also a blizzard going on outside. They end up taking horses through the blizzard as infected continue to chase them as they go to the only close by shelter they are aware of.
Please explain to me when in all of this Joel was supposed to make sure it was safe to go with Abby and please explain what other choice he had?
Joel's choices are
1. Leave Abby to die as she's trapped under a filing cabinet with infected on top of her.
2. Interrogate Abby as to who she is mid fighting a hoard and running through a blizzard.
3. Decide to wait it out with the hoard on the other side of the barrier that's about to break or brave it alone in the blizzard away from camp.
4. Go to a safe shelter nearby to wait out the storm with a stranger.
Those are his only options. I seriously want to know what else he was supposed to do here.
People are acting like he had much if any time to be cautious or as if he had much choice about what to do. The other choices also potentially lead to death.
