Then put them at the 8th seedOnly pause I have with 8 teams and P5 auto champs is what if a 7-5 team from a garbage division ups and beats a team in their champ game? Surely there would be better teams deserving over them?
Needs to be some kind of check. Like top 10 + champ = auto, otherwise make another at large. Make the ships a top factor in resume, but if you win a conference with an otherwise shyt season you get compared to other at large teams.
no. they played a season to get to their conference title game, and they lost it. if you lose on a neutral field to a 7-5 team in week 13 you have just been exposed.
if Florida state lost to georgia tech then clearly they're not worthy to play in the tournament of champions. Same goes for alabama and missouri.
okay, but if they didn't make their ship thats on them for not winning their conferenceGuess it depends if you trying to get the 8 best teams in if that happens.
The part you bolded isn't taking about those teams. Those teams going to be judged against other at large anyway for not winning the conference. I'm talking about the 7-5 champ getting in over a couple 10-2 teams that didn't didn't make their ship, etc.

there is no pity for the 10-2 team who didn't win their conference because an 12-0 who BEAT THEM lost in the conference title game to a 7-5 team. If its truly a tournament of champions the 7-5 DESERVES its place and the 10-2 team don't.
If SOMEHOW the big 12 had TCU and BAYLOR on the same side of division and TEXAS on the other half at 7-5, and texas BEAT BAYLOR who has already BEAT TCU, then NEITHER tcu OR BAYLOR deserve the shot...8-5 TEXAS does beacuse it won the conference.
stop thinking about it as a 'playoff of the best' but as a 'tournament of CHAMPIONS to decide a NATIONAL champion'
in fact a real example would be if Missouri beat alabama
you'd have 11-2 Missouri in the tournament
11-2 alabama in the peach bowl vs. TCU
10-2 Miss st. in citrus bowl vs minnesota
but guess what
bama should've beat missouri so there is no tears to be shed for them.
I'm talking more if you got say a GT that loses an early game vs a G5 team, goes 5-3 in a weak costal but wins the tiebreaker, gets wrecked by UGA, then beats an FSU for the acc.
Then you got an 11-1 Michigan State that trashes everyone but OSU and watches an OSU/WISC Big 10 champ game.
Mich State prob gets an at large anyway but why should that GT team get an auto over them? I guess we disagree in that I think it should be the best 8 teams.
Really I don't see how you can put out any team just for losing their champ game either without looking at the whole picture. If you have #1 and #2 undefeated playing in their ship, the loser is out of the tourney?
If you are a highly ranked team that wins your ship you are in. I'm saying at that point all those other hypothetical teams would need to be compared together for the at large spots.
it is if you include MWC / MAC / CUSATheres only 5 P5 conferences though, and my whole scenario depends on an 8 team playoff. By definition thats not strictly a tournament of champions.
