A little deceiving because the data uses kids who parents did or did not go to college.

Far more people attend college than say 30 years ago. One reason is jobs that did not require college degrees or associate degrees now do.

Second it is much more easier to attend college now with easier access to junior college and online schools. One main reason for this is college education is big business for schools. Aka for profit education.

Finally a parent attending college does not mean they completed college. But it checks off their child as being a second generation college student once that child attends college.

So as a person you can attend college for a semester and drop out. Get married have a child and never attend college again. But if your child attends college the child will be a second generation college student and not a first generation.

30% of Americans have college degrees

and on the opposite end, if your parent attended and finished college but was an international student. They stayed became citizen and had kids, their college experience is no where near the same as their kids from the application process to being on a college kids. Those kids should be considered First Gen as well, but are not.

Its kinda a weird definition.

They literally wouldn't be first gen college kids, so why should they be considered that?

because their experience with the college process and schooling is not the same as their parents.

shyt like FAFSA is legit a foreign concept to their parents. I know this because I was that. I never considered myself a first gen student because my parents were college grads. It was only when I talked to people in the student affairs department at the college I work at that they showed that to me. My mom had no idea what FAFSA was and looking for scholarship was foreign to her. She also aint know shyt about student life. It was class and go.

I dont think of myself as 1st Gen but the experience I had with applying, navigating financial aid, and attending school was similar to a first gen student's.

The article says that the poorer students ar funneled now into HBCUs rather than other schools, which in general is good for black Americans. Hence this is an unexpectedly beneficial consequence from D1 schools overlooking 1st generation athletes. HBCUs could use more students and basketball and football talent. Quote:

"The more elite the university’s academic and athletic reputation, the more these dynamics come into play. By contrast, the number of first gens at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) is increasing, with the percentage now more than twice the rate of other schools."

That really does sound pretty awesome. Seeing all these major stars coming from HBCU's.

The label isn't who has a college process like their parents, its literally 1 generation of college attendees.
So using simple language and common sense, if mom and dad went to college and met in college, their kid isn't a 1st gen college attendee.
This isn't trickery, its just reality, now maybe you want to use different label, fine, use one, but you don't get to destroy or ignore meaning of words in the english language because it doesn't work for you.

My mother went through the process but it was so long ago, she wasn't much help as well as my dad. They got much better with my sisters which mainly end up being me doing all of the work to get them into college.

my mom had zero idea. I did it all myself, which is similar to first generation students.

Interesting article, although I would not have used the term "gentrification" it does not fit the themes of the article at all. The way people perceive/write about Black college students backgrounds has become stagnant, and that is not exclusive to sports. And the modern college scholarship paradigm typically does not benefit poor Black students as much as it should, they are getting the short end of the stick. But because class distinctions are not emphasized in discourse or policy they will continue to not get as much assistance as they should.

interesting read. I don't mess with The Undefeated because of their c00nish comments regarding Steve Kerr, but this was worth the view.

It is true that these days youth basketball has become a business, and as with most businesses, those with money and resources capitalize. Would be first generation college kids probably don't have access to personal trainers, big time camps, and the like. That's why it's up to the community to come together and make sure those opportunities trickle down.
