I am a BIG time fan of both of these artists. And I don't understand the hate for either one to be honest.

When Jay drops an album, I know that I am going get (usually) solid wordplay, double meanings, and subliminals . But the main thing is that theme of progress and achievement. Some people look at it as bragging (and it probably is), but that appeals to me.

When Nas drops I expect some hits and misses. And you always gotta cross your fingers when it comes to production. But every album has those select verses that just stops you dead in your tracks and makes you realize why he really is the best rapper in the purest sense of the word. He's the only rapper that I would ever listen to despite the beat. He's that good.

Basically they are both living legends and we should just appreciate the fact that they still care enough to make great hip hop music.

Perfect!

Alright first and foremost you all need to understand the idea behind the way these guys market themselves to you. Nas is seen as the underdog, the guy who's life has never been firmly fixed in that happy place, if I'm honest he's at that hardcore, true Hip Hop sound of the second class citizen African American Male who used Hip Hop as a way of giving their middle finger to the Government and the social classes. He embodies everything good about Hip Hop; going back to the root of why it started and naturally on a Hip Hop forum most of you guys will Stan Nas harder because you have to listen to more than just the best, rhyme schemes etc. You have to decipher the poetic nature of my mans lyrics. Nas is cool with that, he has his fans and he's making solid sales and nice money doing what he loves.

Jay-Z CANNOT rap about anything Nas-like anymore, he's on a whole different level in terms of wealth and fame and he's found a way of appealing to the masses which I can't hate at all. Jay has given us his best in terms of real Hip Hop and it's alright that the king can do whatever he wants now. It's the greatest rap rivalry in history IMO purely because they are so different. Both dudes where like Ying and Yang. You cannot have the underdog without having the king and that's what made it so intriguing. Personally, I think they're both geniuses and each hustle must be respected accordingly. The way these two beefed at the height of their powers was a master stroke by the record execs.

Hisham out.

I disagree, people give Nas a pass for being an underachiver and one of the greatest ones not just music.

Nas : fly like GQ man of the year

Jay : actual GQ man of the year

Nas : build my own motown

Jay : roc nation & def jam

basically Nas is the better rapper but better rapper does not mean better music, i think Jay now has become 110% buffonish and Nas just plays a humble role dont wanna fail so he dont try to win.

Nas normally puts 2 videos per album, other rappers like 4 or 5.

They are the same Rappers but Nas skill set is superior and he found a comfort zone in that consciousness while Jay is just way too shallow to rap about anything else.

Oh really???

Do you know how many dope albums came out in 1996? No one gave a shyt about RD until Vol 2 sold 5 million records and Jay started radio promo for a "rerelease" of RD where he called it classic every chance he could

Again Image^^^^

And this wasn't meant to be an anti jay thread. I'm a big fan of his. But some of you Stan's need to come down to earth.

Just because no one cared about RD doesn't mean it was not just as lyrical as illmatic

the difference is Jay Z is more honest than Nas....

for the record i like them both but

Nas has managed to convinced a lot of his silly fans that he is living their life...

Nas is living exactly the same life as Jay, hes driving Bentleys, hes a millionaire and hes on private jets.....

Jay raps about the life he lives.... when Jay raps about being on a yacht i believe him, when Nas raps about ghetto children Im sure he aint in the ghetto giving em a cheque.... not that it matters because its irrelevant when it comes down to skills....

just highlighting the stupidity of fans that cant tell fact from fiction

no matter how much I like Nas and Tupac their fans seem to have a stupidity and inobjectivity that is irritating

RD was independent and still went hold quicker than illmatic.
What the fukk are you talking about, if no one cared about RD less people cared about illmatic. Everyone called it a classic besides the 4 mics in the source, of you look at the albums that got 4 or 4.5 they are arguably better than the one that got 5. That why they changed these classics to 5 mics a few years later from the wu to snoop/Dre to jay to Pac.

Nas stans always have these dumb ass arguments.
nikkas been saying the same shyt for 11 years and still don't understand how small their circle of boxhead stay at home and read jayzs book on a Saturday 4 eyed geek ass squares is. No one cares if you think Nas is better, this is not even politics, this is not comparing economic ideologies it's fukking comparing 2 of the greatest artists from the past 20 years. Nerd ass nikkas its alright to think that Nas is the best without keeping jays dikk in your mouth. Why always Jay and never Big, rakim, Pac, Face, 3 stacks and the other cats that arguably are goats.

the last few years has made this discussion laughable.

nas' growth as an artist is only rivaled by common on an elite rapper level (budden is arguably the only other, but clearly he doesnt have mainstream history to compare). common sometimes jumps out the window w/ his shyt, but its not for a lack of trying to expand. jay is stuck on luxury rap and basquitesque hipsterisms. his business accumen masks it a great deal and he does it well, BUT over the past decade all he's really done is move from the big boy racks at dr. j's to a personal shopper at barneys. i get the braggadocio that hiphop is always going to have its pivot foot planted in, but let's be reality, artist growth matters if we're talking about the truly greats.

These threads and their comments really serve to point out who really listens to the music, and who are just stans with preconceived opinions.

word? so NaS doesn't rap about living it up? have you listened to LIG? he's bragging about the good life all throughout that album.. no one thinks NaS or jay-z stay hanging out in the hood.... at their level of wealth it would be stupid of either one of them.. that's how jammaster jay got killed... however, we know NaS will come back to the hood to show love as evidenced by the NaSty video....

how is nas an underachiever if anything hes an overachiever you can count on hand how many commercial songs Nas put out yet hes managed to have 7 platinum albums you can't say that about any other rapper
