I am a BIG time fan of both of these artists. And I don't understand the hate for either one to be honest.

When Jay drops an album, I know that I am going get (usually) solid wordplay, double meanings, and subliminals . But the main thing is that theme of progress and achievement. Some people look at it as bragging (and it probably is), but that appeals to me.

When Nas drops I expect some hits and misses. And you always gotta cross your fingers when it comes to production. But every album has those select verses that just stops you dead in your tracks and makes you realize why he really is the best rapper in the purest sense of the word. He's the only rapper that I would ever listen to despite the beat. He's that good.

Basically they are both living legends and we should just appreciate the fact that they still care enough to make great hip hop music.

Jay-Z's entire career is based on his image as a successful business man. (previously drug dealer). He is very good at marketing this image based on what he accomplishes off the mic. The essence of his discography boils down to accomplishing something then rapping about it. I got away selling drugs and got rich, I own my own label, I'm the president of def jam, I married Beyonce, I made 100+ million selling Rocafella, now I ride in private jets and buy million dollar paintings, I have a daughter now...... You get my drift.

Nas on the other hand is the exact opposite. His accolades and acclaim stem from the music he creates. He is looked at as an "artist". When someone tries to criticize Nas they go for his image. Slave to labels, never made enough money, marital problems. He can drop Classic material but still be clowned for what goes on in his personal life.

I find it amazing how much image matters for an artist. In Jays case as long as he is making headlines, closing deals with the nets and making millions he will be applauded no matter how average his music is.

Nas on the other hand will continue to be underrated as long as people use his personal life as a reason not to check for him.

Truth!! Jay and Nas are the ying/ yang... If nas was a lil more business minded hiphop may be in a different state than it is right now.. As great of an mc jayz is, he ultimately ushered in the era of"I'm a hustler" that rhymes very well.. In turn that ushered hustlers that don't rhyme that well but are cleverly swagged and image conscious to fool the masses over hot production...

jay is someone you should look up to if you wana be a successful businessman

nas is someone you should look up to if you wana be a dope mc

That's my whole point. People look at Jay and say this guy is taking rap to new levels. He motivates me. But this is all based on image and accomplishments outside of the booth.

Jay has a very good catalog of music and is one of the best to ever do it but that does not change the fact that he doesn't have a game changer like illmatic. He still doesn't have that one album that instantly made every MC step up their pen game.

I would argue that Jays impact on the game is setting new trends. From crystal to button ups to maybachs. Once Jay raps about it everyone wants to copy him. Look at how many people stopped wearing timbs after BP3.

Stop this shyt. RD is every bit as lyrical if not more than Illmatic.

But, that has nothing to do with anything.

As I mentioned before, Jay Z has more responsibility when it comes to making albums than these other artist

U can't compare one to the other.. Its all personal preference to what you wanna hear.. The things you say that makes Nas the better MC than Jay makes him light years ahead of cats like Redman or even BIG if you catch my drift..

Im a fan of both and I personally believe Life Is Good might be the best thing either one of them has dropped since maybe the Black Album, but Jay's verse on No Church in the Wild or his 2nd verse on Beach Chair tops any one verse or is at least just as good as any verse I've heard from Nas in that same time period..

Both are dope and should be credited with their longevity, even if they are in different lanes. Main thing is they are still here and still relevant.

They both have poor music now, but Nas does what Jay does too .... only he cant do it like Jay therefore had to tame it.

example :

Nas 'fly like GQ man of the year'

Jay 'actual GQ man of the year'

Oh really???

Do you know how many dope albums came out in 1996? No one gave a shyt about RD until Vol 2 sold 5 million records and Jay started radio promo for a "rerelease" of RD where he called it classic every chance he could

Again Image^^^^

And this wasn't meant to be an anti jay thread. I'm a big fan of his. But some of you Stan's need to come down to earth.
