I will say, that was wack

Kojima is an industry darling, but they went too far. Could've made an exception for larian since they weren't a super popular studio before bg3 and this is their victory lap. Especially to honor a dead coworker that helped make it possible

Still, they can honor them with their own platform. Internet has opened the doors where these big award shows really aren't needed.

The fans will show up for the games at the end of the day. If devs created their own platforms, they can have the freedom to do whatever they want.

Then why not just turn it into a trailer show? Why even fake like it's an award show?

Also even Geoff agrees it was fukked up, so what are we even talking about?

☝️

I saw people saying they should split the award ceremony up into two parts. Imagine how no one would tune into the actual award part at that point :mjlol:
Gamers care about the game of the year but most of that other stuff would just fall flat. TGA got to be the most talked about game awards show because it fully leaned into promotion to get people watching. I do think they should trim down some of these categories to just a core group of main ones and shorten the show time to an hour and a half but many people are watching for game trailers and wacky meme moments.

I will say Geoff has his quirks that he pushes over all else though. Nobody really need to see Kojima up there and they can't even show footage of his new game. Geoff also knows it's like getting a kid to take bitter medicine to get all these gamers to watch an award show.

People act as if Geoffs event is televised and the others are just youtube streams, when in fact they are all just YouTube streams of the same event with the same people attending them, just one managed to gain more viewership and notoriety because of the thing everyone apparently hates, celebrities and ads.

People are literally just asking for more than 30 secs.

Geoff agrees that the music was coming on too soon

I don't get what's hard to understand here when even the owner is aware and in agreement. Idk how this is about people being disingenuous about what they care about, why it should fall on the devs or anything else.

I think this year especially it just slapped people in the face that this is mostly a giant commercial. It was the overreaction to Christopher Judge's speech that did it.

People are literally just asking for more than 30 secs.

Thats not all the criticisms are for though. People still complain about the ad’s everywhere, the celebrities on stage, kojima, the muppets, how not every category is given stage presence, etc.

Basically all typical award show stuff. People don’t seem to realize that the Grammys and Golden Globes are also marketing events

Most of the shyt you quoted on the front page is about length of the speeches. You literally have a tweet about the BG3 devs being shown a "please wrap up" sign while honoring a dead coworker. You have another where an indie dev is pointing out the sub 30 sec speech time in contrast to Kojima's long speech because he's Geoff's buddy.

I genuinely don't think people would give a fukk about any of that if it wasn't so obvious that speeches were getting cut off basically the moment they started.

Literally every tweet you quoted besides the Palestinian one is about the short speech times.

Hell, if you click Geoff's tweet about how people felt, there are tons of replies referencing the "please wrap it up" sign and them not having time to finish their tweets.

So you think them extended the speech duration next year (which they will definitely do) will fix everyones criticisms with the show?

The criticism boils down to a lot of people not liking advertising and having an adverse reaction when realizing they're being advertised to. TGA is literally advertising as entertainment. People got lost in the hype of seeing new game trailers but when you really analyze what's going on it's ads all over.

It's like watching Marques Brownlee's YouTube channel. That channel is advertising as entertainment. He demos all these products for you and sells you on them. Some people will watch that channel and not think too deeply about the fact that they're watching ads as a form of entertainment and the content of the channel is really just a form of advertising. Others will complain that YouTube puts ads on their video that's also an ad.

I think people’s criticism is that unlike a YouTube video, when the ad ends you get to finish the thought.

Here that doesn’t happen.

How is asking to make the show 30 mins longer to allow the devs to talk a little longer than 30 secs = not liking advertising or being unaware they're being advertised to.

People aren't idiots and that's a strange way of purposely misinterpreting criticism.

Me saying they shouldn't have cut the BG3's devs off that early especially when they're honoring a dead coworker means I'm aloof of what the show actually is?

Geoff himself said the time was too short. Is he unaware of the show he's making?

It’s not. Either it was an intentional decision or the live show producer isn’t good.

It was intentional. Some email or something is out saying they had 30 secs to be respectful to other award recipients. It seems the music played sooner or they should at least have been more flexible out to 40-70 secs.

Seems next year they'll just make it slightly longer which addresses the main complaints I've seen.
