See Rodney King, a lawyers case is only strong as the jury that believes in it, If his lawyer manages to get 2 or 3 sympathetic jurors, he may get a mistrial or a hung jury.

The problem with most defendants, the prosecution over charges and stack all those prison numbers to overwhelm you.

You see I'm not describing "self defense" at all, you are limiting your scope of what the law will allow as justification. Crime of passion has been successfully used, in infidelity in marriage i.e. finding your spouse in bed with someone and you shoot them, is a crime of passion if there is no planning. If Troy's lawyer show he was reacting to the scuffle and seeing his friend and himself being shot. He can successfully argue that he may convince a Jury or Jury members.

What makes you is what breaks you. Same thing with GS9. People listened to them because they were authentic street cats with clout (at least in GS9's case). But to maintain that rep publicly gotta bust that gun.
