Ayton got all the signs of a dude that will stop giving every bit of a fukk as soon as the check clears
NEW YORK -- Deandre Ayton was asked Wednesday to define what success in the NBA looks like to him.
"Definitely getting to my second contract; that's my success," Ayton said at media availability for top lottery picks.
Ayton, a 7-foot-1 big man from Arizona, is widely expected to be the top player taken in Thursday's NBA draft. The Phoenix Suns own the No. 1 overall pick.
Ayton's answer might raise some eyebrows because the politically correct answer to these questions usually references team success. But the 19-year-old later added that getting to his second contract would likely indicate that his team thrived on the court.
Depending on the criteria he meets early in his career, Ayton could be eligible for a second contract worth in excess of $100 million.
His four-year rookie contract is projected to start at $8.2 million in his first season. Ayton will be eligible for a rookie extension after his third year. The center was asked on Wednesday about the possibility of playing with star Suns guard Devin Booker.
"I can pick-and-pop and Devin is a threat coming off the pick, so that'd be pretty hard to guard," he said.
Ayton, who signed a multiyear endorsement contract with Puma earlier this week, is from the Bahamas. He said on Wednesday that he feels honored to have the chance to be a role model for young children growing up in his home country.
"It would be a big blessing," said Ayton, who averaged 20.1 points and 11.6 rebounds at Arizona during his freshman season. "Having that chip on your shoulder and carrying a nation behind me. It's a huge opportunity to show that Bahamian people, we're not just a country of just track and field athletes. Watching [fellow Bahamian and Sacramento Kings guard] Buddy Hield, [Michigan State guard] Tum Tum [Nairn], they're responding too. It's huge to be part of that."
I'm a Suns fan, but I agree with you.Up until his playoff run this year, I was eagerly anticipating the day we traded him.I've watched damn near every game since he came into the league.I've seen this man sleep walk through games/look disinterested 80% of the time.People who only watched the playoff run got him gassed up.Trust me.I know this squad.I remember arguing with people who thought Kelly Oubre was good/"too important to the team culture" to let walk away.Had me thoroughly disgusted because I knew Kelly had the most narcissistic game in the league next to Westbrook..With less talent. When you watch these guys on an every game basis, you pick up on things that go beyond the stat sheet.Honestly, I wouldn't care if we traded him.
Not paying Ayton but extending the whole team. Situation is 10x worse
And even if he does "stop giving every bit of a fukk", that is still better than the alternative, which is seeing him walk out the door. The Suns will be back to square one, relying on the likes of Alex Len and Greg Monroe. And they'll be going through the whole damn thing again of waiting for the next big man to draft, and then waiting x-years for him to develop, only to then find out he's not going to be better than Ayton.Ayton got all the signs of a dude that will stop giving every bit of a fukk as soon as the check clears
They're going to give him a max eventually. They have no choice. I think they just want to motivate him. Ayton is one of those players that has to be pushed. They don't want him to get comfortable after he gets paid.
It is embarrassing that this leaked though. Ayton was the #1 pick and a lot of his peers already got a max. Ayton had a great playoff run. The only player that gave him trouble was Giannis going god mode.
Whole list is valid. The fact he said this right after he got draft was (and still is) concerning.
Ayton: NBA success is getting to 2nd contract
Sure he tried to spin it as a result of team success, but its still a bad look.
I like Ayton, but I don't blame the Suns for being hesitant on giving him the max.
He has improved on defense, but his offense is still below average. Sure he took a lesser role last season, but he could have easily been the 2nd or even 1st scoring option if he was a more versatile offensive threat.
The issues/concerns I have with Ayton are:
5. Very limited ball handling skills (Which means he has no faceup game).
4. Average to below average hands. Sometimes he drops easy passes for no reason.
3. Very limited post moves on offense.
2. Inconsistent motor. The fact Dario Saric was closing games out last season is embarrassing. Ayton was sometimes sitting the whole 4th quarter.
1. His inability to draw fouls and get to the FT line.
I'm 50/50 on this
Sarver is cheap, but DeAndre Ayton is not a max player...yet
But I get it, it's thr NBA and he's seeing his peers get max contracts
