In retrospect, we all probably should've seen this coming.

James Jones has gradually constructed this team by maximizing space with all the shooters he's brought on (creating a team that he envisioned as a player), where someone like Ayton has never really developed his game beyond the arc, and it's in conflict with the direction Jones wants to go in. I think that's what it boils down to, that because he identifies Ayton is never going to be a great 3-pt shooter, he's not willing to anchor the future of the team to someone that doesn't fit his vision.
it boils down to the Suns wanting him to take a 3-4 year max and Ayton (and his 'camp') wanting the full 5 year max

the Suns dont seem opposed to paying him the max Ayton can recieve, they just dont want to do the full 5 years

I dont understand why they dig in on the different between 4 or 5 years - is there any salary cap implication here? Wouldnt they likely be saving money on the 5th year long term? I feel like there is some cap languaage the Suns are reading into here? I dont know

If Ayton isn’t a max player, then is he considered a bust? :patrice:

he looked bad against the Nuggets. @MooseMouthMthafuga
I don't think he's a total bust, but so far, he's definitely failed to reach his potential.I don't think he has the heart or internal drive to be anything more than a middling center. He's useful, but you'd expect more from a #1 overall pick.Year 4 and he still doesn't know how to seal his man, face up, dribble, or pull off any post moves. You have to create damn near every scoring opportunity for this dude. And even then, he looks tentative/scared of the rim at times.Finesse soft finisher. He has good touch around the rim, but even then, he has some type of cowardly lion syndrome.Never see him try to be aggressive or exert his will.Competitive edge close to zero on a 1-10 scale.I like the Suns making him prove it this year.If he sulks or continues to play soft, I don't see another team offering him a max contract.

Only thing stopping Ayton is himself. He has the skills necessary, he just needs to be more aggressive

That's what they're throwing out there, but I believe it's a ruse. They're well aware that Ayton won't go for anything less than the full extension, so "offering" him less than that is giving off the appearance they want to retain him (which is really disrespectful in theory too), but in actuality, they don't. They've only had preliminary talks with no actual offer, so that would also suggest to me they're not that serious in keeping him, until whatever needs to change, does.

I think realistically, Ayton will be a similar player to Rudy Gobert, with slightly worse interior defense but better perimeter defense compared to Rudy.

Essentially a high-level role player.

Essentially teams can only sign one of their rookie contract players to a 5 year extension by labeling them as a "designated player". They didn't do it for Bridges as he only got 4 years, so Ayton is wanting the full five and the potential for the extra bread that comes along with it.

It's more than likely Sarver being cheap in now wanting to pay the 5th year salary as there's more than likely no way that Ayton will hit the targets to push the contract to $207 like Luka got. Teams can only offer Ayton the 4 years, so he's not one of their players and I'm guessing that's what Sarver is betting on.

He wants to keep that luxury tax bill as low as possible.

Its not the best scenario.

As @MooseMouthMthafuga stated, he can't create his own offense.

What's wild is he is excellent in the pick and roll, yet his free throw rate is awful.

This is frustrating because he has a good free throw percentage (75.7% for his career)
We saw glimpses of in the finals when he was battling Freak downlow. I saw him had a couple moves in the finals but it was abandoned real quick. I see his potential but I wonder does he have it all upstairs :francis:

It's looking like the Suns reign on top was shorter than leprechauns. 1-3 to start the season. I wonder how this is going to affect Ayton's future going forward.

The team defense has been bad so far. It also doesn't help the team is shooting very inconsistent almost every game.

The team doesn't seem focused and it seems they are distracted. Maybe there is something going on behind the scenes.

Monty needs to make better adjustments. I was hoping Jalen Smith would get some playing time but he is still only used in garbage time.

Also once again Ayton barely gets to touch the ball in the 2nd half of games.
