Wait, WHAT :laff:

It’s literally the other way around. Big died at 24!!! Prime jay started at 25

Out of respect no one addresses the elephant in the room which is: jay was smarter, more wittier, lived a richer life. Would Big have been able to make those types of records? Of course. But unfortunately, he died

Listening to 30 year old jay on blueprint vs 24 year old big on life after death is apples and oranges. We got robbed of a fully mature Big but we’ve been listening to 30 years of it from jay. People pick Big for emotional reasons

What he said isn't what's written in the thread title. It's actually quiet the opposite, he said that during the time BIG was alive he was better than Jay lyrically, and goes on saying that anything after to that isn't comparable cause hiphop kept evolving and BIG didn't had a chance to do that. That aspect implies that late Jay did surpass BIGs peak but it's not a comparison which is reasonable to do.

I think he has a good point, and it's not what been discussed in this thread.

BIG is the perfect rapper to me when everything is considered, but if we are talking just straight lyricism and not the entire package, then i gotta go with jay. a lot of posters in here already made the point, but jay was just more complex and lethal with his pen in his earlier years. big's flow & delivery is just on another level from any rapper ever.

I cant remember who it was out of you two but I made a post a while back about BIG on LAD being way ahead of Jay in that era as far as the whole package including lyrically and yall made a rebuttal of no, he wasnt so I went back and listened to RD and Vol.1, 2, 3

I have to concede that Jay was always a stronger lyricist on paper than Biggie, it was BIG intangibles and the pockets he could catch (which imo no one still can do better) that put him over the edge but early Jay was a demon.... its him, Raekwon or Push/Malice as far as drug bars and criminal minded introspection imo

I won’t get into the who’s better part of the discussion. But BIG’s ability to fit into almost any beat’s setting (that he lived to rap on) really struck me. He just seemed comfortable and confidant rapping on anything with anyone.

Jay definitely improved over time. I’m still impressed by his appearances on the Jay Electronica album the most. He reminded me of Rae and Ghost partnering up for each other’s albums.

Artist? Can't say for Jay. That's debatable. I DONT think he's a better "artist" than Nas. Who has shown to do plenty I've never seen Biggie do in his life and is always willing to take chances with his art. Also more creative than both over the course of his career. As far as being a better rapper? U have more of an argument there.
I don't know bro. Big had always been the best at being able to walk that fine line between having commercial hits while still being hardcore & feeding the streets. While alive he did it better than both. I think we also have to take into account him writing for Jr. Mafia, Lil Kim, & Puff too.

Nas tried to make records like big/Jay and has never succeeded when trying

Nas is more creative like I said he was Lupe fiasco of the 90s

Lupe did Nas better than Nas since.

Big Lupe supporter, but this is insane. Nas is clearly a better lyricist if you are familiar with the definition.
