Remove My Country and Rule and this album is absolutely flawless...and those aren't wack at all, they're just not as fire as everything else.

I didn't even have "Braveheart Party" on mine so I don't count it, lol.

Rule and My Country were both to me. Excellent political tracks for that time, for Nas to question our country’s decision on war and to point out its hypocrisy and the effects of war on veterans right on the heels of 9/11 was dope.

No doubt...I just didn't really love them 2 joints musically. Content wise tho that album is a complete masterpiece...every rapper should study Stillmatic to learn how to actually rap about something. Every song is about a topic except maybe Got Yourself... No blind directionless rhyming.

I enjoyed rule. I actually liked the content of my country, but the production aged extremely bad. I always take it and braveheart party off that way there’s no skips.

I am not talking about commercially. You're saying this album was BIG in the streets. Instead of someone that was next, why wasn't Jay Z that dude with Reasonable Doubt. Even still, him having NO industry hype is false, because he did, in fact have it.

I agree, he wasn't some unknown rapper nor did he flop. He just debuted in a year where Hip Hop was shifting and there were bigger albums dropping weekly and he got lost in the sauce.

because he had to move up the ranks. it wasnt a changing-of-the-guard period. there were no vacancies in 1996.
the lane wasnt open for him to just come out and debut at the top of the pile. 1996 east coast was chock full of previously established acts at their peak.

he showed-n-proved with reasonable doubt. people were expecting him to take the crown with volume 1, but he dropped the ball with that album.

Why? If the narrative is that Stillmatic got 5 because of Blueprint, then surely the only reason they gave Reasonable Doubt 5 mics was to even the playing field. I mean, Nas had two classics and Jay only had one according the Source. A few months after Nas got his second 5 mic album, they go back and up albums to 5 mic status.

reasonable doubt got 5 for the same reasons they gave 5 to RTD, infamous, OB4CL, and 36 chambers.

then add the fact that jay was the hottest rapper in the game when that issue came out, and he already had a shaky relationship with the source anyway(another reason why they were quick to give blueprint the 5 before this).

nobody viewed IWW as a classic back then.
not even in 2002.

that push started in recent years.

That's because Reasonable Doubt wasn't this earth shattering album upon release in the manner that a Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, a 36 Chambers, a Ready To Die or an Infamous was. It didn't stand out in a year where there were multiple stand out albums.

reasonable doubt got 5 for the same reasons they gave 5 to RTD, infamous, OB4CL, and 36 chambers.

The difference between those albums is that they were impactful in the midst of a West Coast dominated scene. When Jay came out with Reasonable Doubt, he had a lot in his favor, but still wasn't an impactful. I mean, who was able to secure a Mary J. Blige feature on a debut album. That was huge even though she wasn't in the video.

When that issue with the adjusted ratings came out, there were arguably a few other rappers hotter than Jay at that point. Nas was fresh off Stillmatic. Ja Rule was killing it on a commercial front as was Ludacris.
