Nah, we should have the college system to be like Europe where people don't be over 200k in debt for a PhD. But you right.
Oh ya, if we didn't have to sell our organs to pay for college then by all means get a PhD. There is a reason so many students that do pursue a PhD aren't American.

this is not true at all.

There are A LOT of people in the trades making more money than folks who have College degrees.
There are a good number of manual labor jobs that they arent able to fill the positions because we dont have enough skilled people to do the jobs.
Sure...compared to english majors.

Not Engineers, and for damn sure not anyone in raw sciences or math.

I don't hate academics of any sort. I don't like how academics is being used to restrict people mentally instead of making people think with more creativity and innovation. STEM, on how it is being taught, is flawed. There needs to be a trade-school like atmosphere that is fiscally smart, where it can produce efficient workers and business owners, and all of that sort. You talking about PhDs, not just a 4 year degree.
STEM teaches you the basics to work a basic job.

Then you get your masters then so on

The bar has been raised.

a STEM student has far more autonomy to create a career than most other fields.

I'm just an engineer who's telling you how it really is out there.
But I see that you haven't contributed shyt to this debate anyway, so please enlighten us with your wisdom:mjlol:
Trades schools and certs will increase the number of minorities in aerospace engineering

I keep hearing about lab techs... They ain't making shyt either.
Many of them don't even have a college degree! They get jobs the old-fashioned way: thru networking.

It's unfair but that's how most people get those kinds of jobs, by knowing people connected to companies (family, friends, acquaintances). Qualifications are almost secondary.
This system hurts minorities the most since it overwhelmingly favors white folks who dominate Corporate America... Unless you have connected white friends willing to help out.

The networking thing was an eye-opener for me. That shyt is so prevalent in my company, it's disgusting (father, son, cousin, friend, etc). Some white dude just got hired mainly because he was once a roommate of a colleague. He didn't even go to college but he's gonna learn on the job (lab tech)
That's a killer for minorities, since almost 80 percent of white folks don't have friends of another race.

Plus, it homogenizes the office since friends tend to have the same qualities and flaws. That's not always beneficial for the company.
I got lucky since I found my job the hard way (I had no connections but my engineering degree was a nice asset).

The question

Should there be more Blacks in STEM? Which is a yes, does not come close to addressing our issues as a community.

To claim so means you have a simple view of whats going on.

i dont agree, i think it does address issues in our community, increasing black people with STEM degrees and STEM knowledge is central to black economics

We're talking about STEM jobs here.
There are other threads about poverty, crime, etc.
Btw, I'm pretty sure that the poverty and crime rates in our community would be much lower if we had more blacks in STEM fields (like asians) :jawalrus:

Heck, I'd go out on a limb and say that the crime and poverty rates among engineers is probably lower than average population.
Shocking, I know:mjlol:

Fam, read up on history, sociology, psychology and economics. You sound DUMB.
