Because very few people would spend 10+ years post-high school before having a 6 figure income. Most white people can't do that, but you expect black folk, a disenfranchised group, to outdo that shyt? :mindblown:

We better off making businesses in our community before branching out to STEM, when we have actual wealth and disposable income to do so.

did you not read what you just posted? the dude from MIT was getting job offers for 115K with a 4 year degree

you dont need wealth and disposiable income to get a 4 year STEM degree and there is nothing stopping black people from pursuing STEM and businesses, those 2 things arent mutually exclusive

the real problem is what you are displaying now, which is ignorance in the black community about STEM and academics

I don't hate academics of any sort. I don't like how academics is being used to restrict people mentally instead of making people think with more creativity and innovation. STEM, on how it is being taught, is flawed. There needs to be a trade-school like atmosphere that is fiscally smart, where it can produce efficient workers and business owners, and all of that sort. You talking about PhDs, not just a 4 year degree.

breh stop it, you dont know anything about STEM and how its taught

STEM and trade schools have nothing to do with each other, i actually agree that there should be more trade schools, but the notion that that has something to do with STEM is just ignorant

i was talking about STEM degrees, which include bachelors, masters and phds in engineering, physics, chemistry and other sciences

to get your PHd, you have to get your masters, to get your masters you have to get your bachelors, that is why the focus is on PHd's, because Phds is the top, the pipeline for PHds comes from people with bachelors,, that is why discussing phd is also a discussion of 4 year bachelor degrees

trade schools have nothing to with the subject of STEM because they dont provide a path to a PHd

Very few people are gifted to have PhD in anything. Very few individuals. Not being anti-intellectual, that is how people are. I also said that the traditional 4 year school are flawed because they have these bullshyt classes that have nothing to do with their major, and it is costing everybody money.

I said that there SHOULD BE a path of STEM majors from a trade school like atmosphere where people can get CERTS much faster and have more opportunities available.

the internet
stop asking for short-cuts

Trade school workers are just technicians. Anyone can do that shyt.
this is not true at all.

There are A LOT of people in the trades making more money than folks who have College degrees.
There are a good number of manual labor jobs that they arent able to fill the positions because we dont have enough skilled people to do the jobs.

Yeah, a lack of blacks in fields with some of the lowest unemployment rates (around 2%) and good wages isn't a problem at all :heh:
I'm an aerospace engineer. There was only 3 of us in my graduating class, out of 70 grads. That was actually a record for blacks... It was back to zero the following year.
So, it's not surprising that I've always been the only black engineer at work (even in huge engineering departments).

first of all nobody is saying that everybody has to be a phd, the article is just saying that there are very few black STEM phds, and its a problem

the fact that you conflate trade schools, certs and STEM shows you have an ignorant view of what STEM is, you dont really know what you are talking about

you can have trade schools for trade jobs, you cant have trade schools for STEM degrees, that makes no sense

Bolded should be reworded to say: Very few people have the work ethic and are willign to make the sacrifices required to have a PhD. PhDs are not difficult to obtain. People just don't see themselves broke and in school for that long. Also, if you don't see yourself as a teacher, then there is no point in getting a PhD. There are only so many colleges in this country hiring, and most companies do not need PhDs running around their spaces. You will always find more Masters and B.S. degrees finding work with companies. PhDs are EVERYWHERE. You better be going to a great school, have tons of publications, have great fellowships, have helped obtain grant money for your boss or have written a grant proposal, and have excellent post PhD work if you expect to do anything with a STEM PhD in 2015. The market sucks. More black people need to try and get into Med School, Pharmacy School, PA school, Engineeering. These are STEM areas where we are woefully underrepresented that have much brighter prospects NOW than just a PhD in a general science. Only get a PhD if you are passionate about it and are smart enough to go to the top schools and top programs IMO (bolded for the emphasis that this is MY opinion). If not then be prepared to have a ton of debt, low high paying job prospects, and the feeling that you have expertise in a VERY specific area of science and not much more.

college degrees arent the same, overall people with STEM college degrees make more money and have less unemployment than other college degrees

Nah, we should have the college system to be like Europe where people don't be over 200k in debt for a PhD. But you right.
