what is Spotify’s play with these podcast? They still have to get people to subscribe.

Do they want people listening to podcast and not music?

the problem with podcast is that the catalog is largely worthless

To them, people are going to stream music regardless. Having Rogan ensures that a large segment of listeners will stream via Spotify instead of using other platforms. It's smart. But it's also a clear cut sign of what they think about music streaming.

Spotify has never had a positive net income at the end of a financial quarter. However their last two quarters had the lowest net losses on record. Podcasts offer an intriguing way to increase revenue and perhaps even hit net profits one day. Whereas they have to pay out money to multiple labels for streaming music, an internal podcast is going to have far lower costs for them. They probably don't even have to pay royalties for it. The incentive is clear.

The problem for Spotify is that artists aren't going to respect this, and anything that drives more people to Apple hurts Spotify. As Apple's streaming base continues to grow, artists may have an incentive to sign straight to Apple. We've seen this in the past to a degree, for instance Drake's temporary exclusive deal. What if Drake's next album is 100% exclusive to Apple? What if Adele follows suit? What if Rihanna signs an exclusive deal with Tidal and Apple? There are a lot of ways for Spotify to get fukked here. Unlike Apple, they don't have as many direct ties to labels as Apple. Interscope...

They are diversifying

they want to become the go to for all audio. they'll eventually add audio books and whatever else is left too.

I get this but currently Joe Budden pod is exclusively on Spotify but there are no ads and it’s on the free version

Isn’t Spotify eventually going to have to get people to pay for Spotify and get advertising dollars?

I’m just not fully sold on Podcast being the key to Spotify being profitable

Eventually they will advertise in pod. I am sure Joe fought against that because he had a little bit of leverage. I bet you during negotiations they will have to do it because of the Rogan signing.

podcast is a few people to pay , albums could be 3 - 100 people to pay. thats how the money breaks down. less overhead and generate the same or more in some cases

These podcasts don’t have to pay a label, publishing etc... better off supporting artists with bandcamp if you really give a shyt

what’s going to keep people on your platform podcast or music?

no one is listening to a podcasters catalogue

I bet podcast listernship is down significantly during the quarantine

not all artists are on bandcamp, thats more for the niche crowd

spotify , apple, tidel are all digital music stores, you think people will remove their music, no, the more ears the better

silly thinking this, we are in the digital age now 2020, people will go back and listen to someones podcast catalogue if they want more information

joe rogan for example has a huge encyclopedia type catalogue
elon musk
kevin hart
rza
Hannibal Buress

etc

many guests from different worlds

your thinking on this subject is too small, think big, the future is here passing you by

i wholeheartedly disagree with this take and would love to see the numbers to back it up.

The one raping musicians is and has always been the record companies.

And if you include indie musicians in this, spotify has given them a lifeline that did not even exist in the 90s.

Nah i think this is a trash take but i gotta see the numbers first
right. it's the record labels that the problem. streaming saved the music industry

Nah fam, these streaming rates apply to both indie and major label artist and they are effing rip offs. Hell Pharrell broke sales records in streaming with Blurred Lines and only got a 2500 dollar check for being a songwriter. Musicians power Spotify. THe INTERNET gave us a platform. Spotify is just one of many options we have. It's not the best but it's one of the most popular hence it's reputation and money. But the streaming game is fukked up financially for all artist. Most make their bread from shows and placements
only popular fully independent artists eat from streaming.
