I watched this recently and while some of the humor is ehh...the movie stands up as it's so much more than a comedy. There's the social commentary of racism, innocent black men in the system, crooked law enforcement. Of course the drama of trying to escape. The ebb and flow of a forced friendship. And what really got me was all the supporting characters and the montage where they aged them and slowly they all died off.

It's not some all time classic, but it's a damn good movie with a great soundtrack

***bolded “some of” since some of y’all have no reading comprehension and act like I said all the comedy is ehh

Classic. I liked it when it came out but it has gotten even better with time. I don't understand why we can't get more movies like this. A bunch of legends and future legends and talented cats just doing their thing.

As I got older I realized the second half of the movie is lowkey depressing as shyt lol
yea, that's lightweight why i think it aged well, shyt was way heavier than it appears on the surface. they got locked up in the 30's and didn't escape until the 90's, the world completely changed by the time they got to experience it again

I always wrote this movie off until I randomly watched on cable a few weeks ago. That scene with Rayford reading the letter, and the whites only pie scene were some of the funniest scenes I've seen in a comedy. Not only is it extremely funny, it has a lot of heart too. Not sure if it's underrated, but it definitely deserves more love as itsn only one of the best black comedies, but one of the best comedies in general.
