it's from the 1950's, and was considered prosperous and patriotic, as far American Dream fulfillment. This went further in the 80s, the yuppie age, when it was not only a house, and nuclear family, but the expensive car, the clothes, the second home, the Rolex. The American Dream became the professional class. but, yeah there's no real reason why it needs to be dominant. it's cultural, not based on any "real" thing beyond that.

Like grandparents, their children and their families, so you have the elder grandparents, both of their sons and their sons wives and children all living together in a big house, or on a compound, etc. Grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts and kids (all cousins) all in close proximity.
