As a native New Yorker I notice that a lot of the outside hate is based on the complexity/cosmopolitan nature of our population. That's why some of these black posters are almost echoing racist whites in their criticisms of New York.
We do not have a homogeneous "black" vs "white" part of town. There is so much ethnic diversity within every single racial-ethnic category that black folk here might not even be able to communicate in the same languages and be neighbors for DECADES. I can understand why someone from the South Side of Chicago or other historically AA communities might be bewildered by that... Black people don't all frequent the same places, have similar experiences, even within one neighborhood. NYC breeds the hustle mentality because community cohesion is besides the point, people come here and stay here to chase their version of the American dream.
There is still no where better to be, whether you're educated or uneducated, in terms of building a career. Our municipal infrastructure and the need for trades makes this a thriving place not just for the ultra-educated (think Silicon Valley) but also those with more of a technical inclination.
