:what:

nah you tweeking breh..aaliyah was way more popular than mya..

they were pretty much neck-n-neck by the time aaliyah passed. mya was definitely hotter in 2001.

and you have to remember, aaliyah had a 4-year head-start on her. mya was playing catchup to most of those chicks.

On her own, she wasn't as popular as Aaliyah.

lol.

since when was aaliyah ever on her own??

The thing about artists being overrated AFTER death is that they were rated while they were alive. You don't just go from a relative nobody when you were breathing to acclaim without having made an impact while living.

i can think of quite a few artists like that actually. in fact, somebody on your team was just gassin up mac dre in here. im gonna go back and upp it.

if somebody is campaigned for hard enough, it will happen.

Timbaland made Aaliyah.

r.kelly made aaliyah.

missy & timbo saved her.

I don't know if I'd say R. Kelly made Aaliyah. He's worked with other female talents who were arguably better than Aaliyah and they didn't have the same success (Changing Faces, Sparkle). Her writers and producers and team are a huge part of her success, but some credit has to be given to her ability to bring it all together.

you cant compare them to aaliyah.

for starters, they didnt have the same situation, and werent signed to the same labels. AALIYAH WAS SIGNED TO HER UNCLE, who is barry hankerson. a big dude in the industry and the only reason she even had a record deal. i luv how yall conveniently overlook that. some of these dudes have no clue but i know that YOU KNOW BETTER.

secondly, they werent in the same lane. aaliyah was basically a teeny-bopper in comparison to changing faces or sparkle. this is like comparing lil romeo's success to c-murder.

Her music career was on its way down when when she released her last album and got reupped when she died (Could've reupped without her dying as well). However she was moving towards Hollywood and my guess is that she would be acting. Perhaps in shyt like Empire and Tyler Perry movies and competing in that K Michelle market.

aaliyah would be nowhere near the k.michelle market. nowhere near. k.michelle is of that mary j/monica/keyshia breed.

aaliyah wouldve literally made that same exact autotune track with t-pain thats in the OP and then desperate attempts at crossover pop records.

Was it true that Aaliyah was 6'7"?

Those leather pants and half shirts made her look tall as fukk.

she probably wasnt even 5'7.

most of the industry is like 5'5.

i feel you tho. especially when she was running around dressed like nwo-era sting. all she needed was the baseball bat. i bet she wanted to carry one. that wouldve been great.

That beauty might've been timeless...Imagine if she had a baby and got thick

Aaliyah took a break to do movies and lost momentum,i do think whats being left out is how she connected with fans,to women they felt like she was they homegirl,to dudes she was that around the way girl next door

im sorry but im tired of people acting like she was a dime too. i usually let it slide cuz its not relevant to the topic but enough is enough. she was just your typical overrated light-skinned broad. nothing spectacular there.

around the way girl??:usure: she always came off like she was from a well-to-do neighborhood & family.

replaced at the top of what exactly? what in the hell was aaliyah ever at the top of??

How many dead really get praised in hiphop though? Its really just Pac,then you got Biggie fans overdoing it to keep up with Pac....but overall nobody who died really gets praised like that, you probably got Mac Dre in a distant 3rd....the rest get forgotten like the rest...being that nobody living has passed Pacs catalogue I don't see the problem with the praise,if he retired instead of died he'd still be the goat based off discography...So I don't see how him falling off would've hurt him.

claim that barely anybody gets propped up after death, then turn around and mention mac dre in the same breath as pac & big brehs.

I do think some of these other chicks in the game (Ashanti, Ciara, etc) who had a few hot years might not have been as relevant if she had been around

ashanti came out the gate when the fake aaliyah love was in full gear, and she topped all that chit, coming out bigger than aaliyah ever was. plus ashanti wrote her own songs. to say that ashanti wouldnt be relevant with aaliyah around is foolery. she was bigger than aaliyah.

ciara had a bigger run than aaliyah too, if yall want to be really real. and she cant sing a lick but she can morph into turbo when she hit that stage. nobody broke their necks to see an aaliyah show. there was a big thread about ciara/aaliyah bout a year ago. CLASSIC NICCA.

I don't know how she was in real life,Im talking about based on her image, she was marketed as the around the way chick as was her music and was successful doing it. You can be from around the way without being Keisha Cole:comeon:....She was that girl who went from being just one of the homies to growing up and got you looking at her like:whoo:

nikkas still got a special place in they hearts for Sanaa Lathan based on Love and Basketball,Aaliyah is no different:mjcry:...watching that transformation:blessed:

She was marketed perfectly, and these things all attribute to how she connected with people and the affection they had for her as well as attraction:banderas:

And oh yeah,Mac Dre is a gawd of an entire subculture unlike anybody else outside of maybe Screw:childplease:....But my statement would be accurate regardless since I said he was a DISTANT third to Pac and Biggie, and I said BARELY anybody:manny:

If Ciara dies today nobody gives a damn:manny:...I remember bytches learning entire dance routines for talent shows and just for the hell of it,not dancers just regular chicks who liked Aaliyah:banderas:....and this was back when you had to go to a lot of trouble to record the routine and keep rewinding that vhs tape to learn it.

You always go too damn far in these Aaliyah threads Wacky:pachaha:

And most of them were immortalized as something that they weren't and half the hip-hop fanbase didn't mess with them when they was alive. ODB, Dilla, Big L and Steez are the best examples of that.

I agree, most of em were actually quite good at what they did, but most of people didn't care/know about em while they were alive.

In death they were reborn.

:mjlol: But are these guys "bob marley" status like Pac?

people have been pushing for pimp c/ugk for years.

and then theres this mac dre stuff:

bad comparison seeing that ciara hasnt been on the scene like that in years. you have to at least be active for people to put ridiculous "what-ifs" on your resume. ciara's chapter is already closed.

i'd take ciara's impact in the '00s over aaliyah's impact in the '90s

you think aaliyah was the only artist that got emulated in talent shows?:wow:

you post way too many smilies.

i know what the intended image was. it just came off fughaze. i enjoyed it for what it was, but im not gonna swallow it and type in kayfabe 21 years later.

every city has a mac dre. and i often hear that he wasnt even as popular out there when he was alive like people try to make it seem. i remember mac minister's name ringing more bells in real-time.

Nothing wrong what he said. It's the truth

You would think she was Whitney Houston when she was alive. She wasn't even bigger than Brandy

Aaliyah is a product of death, 90s nostagila and a great production team

You are quoting too many posts :whew:

I'm not saying that she would be singing like K Michelle, I meant to say that she would be as "big" as K Michelle and sound more like Ciara (except that her albums would be dope too). Ciara drops banging ass singles but her albums suck unlike Aaliyahs.

First how in the hell are you going to "SAMPLE" Aaliyah and in the same breath say, "Oh she would of fell off". LOL, that makes no sense. You wouldn't be sampling her now if you didn't know her popularity and impact.

Think of every hit song Timbaland made for Missy, Nelly furtado and Justin after Aaliyah's passing. Even if half of those joints went to Aaliyah she could of very well had hits into the late 2000's.

read between the lines. the main idea of what he was saying is that aaliyah wasnt above using autotune. she was no aretha.

lol @ you banking aaliyah's future on the hopes that she could piggy-back off of missy & timbaland into the sunset.

the rest of your post was stuff that got shot down like 24 hours ago. ur taking the thread backwards with all that.

This is a weird thread. Lot of irrational Aaliyah hate.

Yes Aaliyah wasn't the greatest singer (not like it matters) but overall, her art (Timbo beats, Fatima choreo, Static writing, her calm and alluring vocal delivery) was the strongest in RnB in the mid-late 90s, period. She was doing shyt nobody had ever heard or seen before. And it was superb. Repeatedly. I think someone like that deserves respect. And her enduring legacy shows that it had a huge effect on people.
