I don't believe she got high or for the first time because her mom died but being fair she could still feel the loss because now she knows she can never have a relationship with her mother. I knew people who have dead beat parents and even though their parent were objectively trash they had hope. They could tell themselves their parent got shyt to get over and once they do they can be a family or even if her mother was a bum and she accepted it she could want her to live to see what she becomes and accomplishes and to know she made it without her.
