I'm sorry I gotta spoil the party but I'm just gonna go ahead and say it.

Ryan coogler is a hack.

He is nothing more than M. Night Shyamalan with a FBA hairline and a green light.

He wont fool me again.

I dunno even know where to begin. Just like with the black panther movies my issue is his films always play it safe and take no risks plotwise. Just straight down the middle rehashed story and plot arc.

The risk it does take with the the first big music sequence completely took me out of the movie. Break dancers and ballerinas? Really? Spent the first hour of the movie establishing the time period only take you completely out of it? It was all build up, a few cool visuals and very little payoff. I didn't care about the main vampire or his death cause we don't know anything about him and he didn't bother to give him a back story, purpose or motive.

Why didn’t he establish they were in a universe where people already knew vampires were real and exist? The one lady just magically out of nowhere knew what they were and how to kill them immediately. No explanation given. What happened with the Indians too?

Also it’s a period piece from Jim Crow but he makes sure white folks are not uncomfortable and doesn’t really tackle that angle well. All the bad white folks are caricatures.. either monsters or klan members that's white folks can easily disassociate and say they are not like us.

Oh and it didn’t help that the trailer basically showed all the main scenes in the film.
5 / 10 for the music which was great. The rest is mid and generic.
He’s not a hack and I gave this movie a 7/10 but I agree with your points. I actually thought the music was pretty mid for what the premise was

Have to see these type of the films in the hood where Black people feel free to talk to the screen. I didn't get to experience the sound quality yall did but that's the sacrifice. But some of the highlights in my theatre were:

Woman got up and yelled "F this ish! I gotta go pray! I'm not into scary movies." And walked out. She was gone at least 5 minutes.

Then a breh during the climax of one scene yelled "There you go!! Air that bish out!!"

Overall, good film. The build up was good. Then when you got to the main point of seeing the film, it was very good.

Actors: Overall, everybody did their thing. They held their own. Michael B held this back from being classic though. When he plays the action hero in here, he's fine. But dialogue wise, he's struggles. This ain't nothing new but his monotone style. Sounding like he's just reading lines is bad. I honestly wished the true star of the film, was the real lead. I know that ain't gonna happen because he's basically unknown.

Message wise: This one of those type of films I have to watch a couple of times, to truly get the message he's trying. I think I get it overall though.

Women: All shapes and sizes. And that's a good thing. I'm not a Haille stan like some of yall. But when we get to see her "final form" :lupe:
But that Jayme Lawson. Oh my.... And that underplayed the "full figured" woman.

see this is where culture comes into play

tons of ados have long forgotten root work and couldnt tell you what a haint is but plenty can. so why is it unbelievable only a few would know about vampires?

the intro is literally them explaining people imbued with musical talent that can lure dark forces across time and space so the music scene makes perfect sense.

also the indians got the fukk on…why would they need to reappear

i guarantee plenty of white folks will be upset at that ending in the age of Trump because "its making it a race thing" lol
i don’t know why you’re trying to educate him. we know what that tether is already

SN: I kept thinking about K. Dot (or bot for his haters) "Reincarnated". Particulaly, the blues part, the devil. Not saying it's based on that obviously, but just some similiar themes.

Freedom being relative is definitely one of the main themes of the film. It also warns against believing someone when they offer you freedom of any sort. Like Delta Slim only being at the juke joint because he was offered free beer.

Such a bleak message :wow:
The Delta Slim being lured bit was so well executed. shyt felt real.

Be leery of people, even with good intentions, who offer you your vices for service.

Only weirdo is you. I am black american but you MAGA tariq cocksuckers just can't help yourselves even in a movie review thread.

All facts in my post. If you want to have a convo on american imperialism and the perception of americans abroad then bump the OG thread. Has nothing to do with this movie. With MAGA bootlicking c00ns like you who voted for trump the worldwide perception of americans is even worse now.
