Seems to me you went in this ready to hate. Saying it doesn't take any risks in a setting of where strong masculine black men are represented in the deep south wiping out craKKKaz and it's not appreciated is crazy to me. Saying a musical scene that connects the lineage and influences of BLACK MUSIC throughout generations took you out of the film or had no payoff? You are basically hating and not respecting the visualization of black American culture in its purest form.

Naw I went in with too high of expectations. I was looking forward to this movie all year. Never said I didnt like it completely. I didnt love it. Why do yall think anything except mindless praise of something is hating. Not sure why yall do that. And as someone who grew and got roots in the deep south you are preaching to the choir. It soft-shoe'd a bit around jim crow imo and didn't go deep enough into that angle either.

The Other A
You nikkaz reading all these "deep messages" in that shyt crack me up.. nikka its a damn movie chill out.. if you really tried you could read deep messages on the back of box of captain crunch :comeon:

The movie had some dope moments but it also had its share of flaws

Without spoiling it i thought it couldn't make its mind up what it wanted to be or how it wanted me to feel about it as an audience..

Is it a drama about life in the south 1932?
A gangster story?
A love story?
A comedy?
Story about racism?
A musical?
A horror story?
A vampire story?

And if it was supposed to intertwine all those things it did poor job of it imo

Have to see these type of the films in the hood where Black people feel free to talk to the screen. I didn't get to experience the sound quality yall did but that's the sacrifice. But some of the highlights in my theatre were:

Woman got up and yelled "F this ish! I gotta go pray! I'm not into scary movies." And walked out. She was gone at least 5 minutes.

Then a breh during the climax of one scene yelled "There you go!! Air that bish out!!"

Overall, good film. The build up was good. Then when you got to the main point of seeing the film, it was very good.

Actors: Overall, everybody did their thing. They held their own. Michael B held this back from being classic though. When he plays the action hero in here, he's fine. But dialogue wise, he's struggles. This ain't nothing new but his monotone style. Sounding like he's just reading lines is bad. I honestly wished the true star of the film, was the real lead. I know that ain't gonna happen because he's basically unknown.

Message wise: This one of those type of films I have to watch a couple of times, to truly get the message he's trying. I think I get it overall though.

Women: All shapes and sizes. And that's a good thing. I'm not a Haille stan like some of yall. But when we get to see her "final form" :lupe:
But that Jayme Lawson. Oh my.... And that underplayed the "full figured" woman.

Facts

Seeing this with a black theater had that shyt lit

The way they displayed

how the blues comes from pain with Delroy in the car telling the story about his friend that got lynched and turning an indescricable hurt into a rhythm and a song :wow:

Also there was so much to draw from the vampires, them appearing first as goofy culture vultures without true music of their own (white people), but then the main villain getting on his traditional Irish shyt... You could take that as white people being removed from true culture but still having little traces of their pre-white traditions... And thus being instinctively drawn to the real shyt Black folks were living... But not to genuinely partake in, just to devour and snatch for domination...

The transition from the segregated Black side of the street to the white side and back was stunning :wow:

The representation of the white passing black person was on point too :wow: kinda felt sad for the love story that couldn't be and the mix of love and animosity there was between Hailey and Stacks and the rest

I also liked how all characters felt significant. The community was a character in and of itself

This was maybe Michael B. Jordan's best performance.

However, hypothetically lets say they werent twins. And you know Ryan gonna give him a role. Which role would you kept him as (Smoke or Stack) and who would have fit well as the other brother (Not Jonathan Majors)

watched it again this afternoon with this girl, so that's twice in 24 hours. This time, I got to critique it a bit more.
> Solid 7.5 - 8/10. I really dialed in on the dialogue and some other things.
> Watching it a second time, I focused on what I saw as the flaws. The second half of the movie is still the weak point.

I can't get over how poorly written the villain is. His motives aren't really clear. Yes, he wants the preacher, but is it to free his ancestors, or what? It made zero sense to me.
> The Native Americans should've come back and saved people at the end; that went nowhere. I thought they were setting us up for their return.
> The vampire logic towards the end of the movie is dumb. There are like 20+ vampires outside and 6 people inside when the barn opens. They all should have died within, like, one minute, lol. Suddenly, the vampires just start standing around? Lol, what?
> the visual of the guitar scene is pretty cool. Blending past feature and present together. But it has zero impact on the story or anything, it's just a visual, it's like a music video super overhyped.
That theme goes nowhere in with the plot at all.

I'm curious how this would have played out with Jonathan.
