I'm sorry I gotta spoil the party but I'm just gonna go ahead and say it.

Ryan coogler is a hack.

He is nothing more than M. Night Shyamalan with a FBA hairline and a green light.

He wont fool me again.

I dunno even know where to begin. Just like with the black panther movies my issue is his films always play it safe and take no risks plotwise. Just straight down the middle rehashed story and plot arc.

The risk it does take with the the first big music sequence completely took me out of the movie. Break dancers and ballerinas? Really? Spent the first hour of the movie establishing the time period only take you completely out of it? It was all build up, a few cool visuals and very little payoff. I didn't care about the main vampire or his death cause we don't know anything about him and he didn't bother to give him a back story, purpose or motive.

Why didn’t he establish they were in a universe where people already knew vampires were real and exist? The one lady just magically out of nowhere knew what they were and how to kill them immediately. No explanation given. What happened with the Indians too?

Also it’s a period piece from Jim Crow but he makes sure white folks are not uncomfortable and doesn’t really tackle that angle well. All the bad white folks are caricatures.. either monsters or klan members that's white folks can easily disassociate and say they are not like us.

Oh and it didn’t help that the trailer basically showed all the main scenes in the film.
5 / 10 for the music which was great. The rest is mid and generic.

Seems to me you went in this ready to hate. Saying it doesn't take any risks in a setting of where strong masculine black men are represented in the deep south wiping out craKKKaz and it's not appreciated is crazy to me. Saying a musical scene that connects the lineage and influences of BLACK MUSIC throughout generations took you out of the film or had no payoff? You are basically hating and not respecting the visualization of black American culture in its purest form.

Yea I was wondering what the main vampire meant when he said he wanted Sammie and wanted to see his people again or whatever
I think it's because Sammie was so good he could bring everybody's folks in the present moment. When he was playing and the ancestors frrom the past and the future appeared, there was also the Chinese folks' people pulling up and doing their traditional dances. So the vampire probably wanted Sammie's gift to get his Irish folks to appear too.

Just got back from seeing this with the Mrs and I thought the movie was a solid 7/10 for me.

It’s hard to explain without going strongly into spoiler territory but this is definitely Coogler’s most ambitious film regarding the themes that are addressed here. The execution in some parts and the pacing of the film didn’t fully hit the mark for me but I can tell that my opinion of the film is going to get stronger after watching this again because of all of the messages he put in this film.

Just some quick thoughts that could be a reach but :manny:

I really love how Coogler layered the rule about vampires needing to be invited in with the fact that they were white people trying to enter a black establishment under the guise of wanting to join in on the party. I took that as a finger wag to the people that always wanna invite others to the cookout. Those that present themselves as the friendliest can have the worst intentions.

It also felt like the main vampire was a take on the white savior complex too. In his mind, he was being righteous but his actions were bringing harm exclusively to black people

Looking forward to seeing this again. I do wish some things in the film were executed differently but I loved all the different messaging this film presented that I can look past my gripes.

I thought it was misplaced in the film, as well. It came out of nowhere. It would've worked better had each time Preacher Boy played, there was something fantastical shown, or if there were elements of all genres of music in his previous sequences. It also was a hard cutoff between the tones of the film. Preacher Boy had a special gift, and while people loved his playing, it didn't really provide the build up with people being entranced for that particular payoff.

But people seem to be loving it...I don't know if the love what it represents more, or where it fits into the plot more.

I really think Rennick (main vampire) thought he was saving the world, because like he said, becoming a vampire allowed them to get the memories and experiences of the person who turned, and by turning the entire world, it would bring about world peace
He is kinda like a white savior though but it's not applied to strictly black people, it's to the whole of humanity

Like at the end when Sammie is saying the Lord's Prayer and he says, that was forced on my people too (what the English did to the Irish)

Becoming a vampire will "save" the whole human race
