I'm not throwing acid on the character, I like the character, I'm throwing acid on the era and the creation of the character. Marvel had no idea what to do and felt like "hey, spider man is boring now that he's married, let's retcon everything to make it that this guy is the real spider man the the guy people have been reading about since the 70s is a clone." That is the shyt I'm throwing acid on and have an issue with. Then of course when people revolted, they went back and changed it. Homie, I love Ben, I dressed as him for halloween one year as a kid, but its unfortunate for me that he just reminds me of a company having no damn idea what to do with their most popular character.

This is cynical but not cynical enough. A MM Spiderman is the smart $ play. How do you make your biggest character who is now diminishing returns on his movies fresh and new compared to the past five PP movies? How do you market directly to certain growing demographics compared to stagnant ones? How do you make a bold PR move after your studio has been caught exchanging racist tweets? How do you not tell a PP origin story again? If Sony's goal is to maximize the skrilla, Miles Morales is the way to go.

Yeah that was the aim. And I know now they're going to spin some of the characters off in their own books but who knows how it'll be after secret wars and they merge universes

I've assumed they'd go with Peter all along just because it's a sure bet. But if you think about it, going with a minority playing Spiderman isn't a bad idea. Marvel has embraced diversifying their characters in print already. Plus you've got The Fantastic Four movie casting a black Human Torch. Granted, that move got criticism, but the bulk of that, besides nerds/racism, is the fact that FOX is producing it. The main reason it's not a bad idea is because nobody wants to shyt on anything Marvel. You've got dudes acting like fukking Ant Man is gonna be dopeMarvel can do no wrong in the eyes of the majority of fans. Them casting a black Spiderman will cause a ruckus amongst the people you would expect it to but be lauded as progressive and brave by the majority, as long as the movie is dope.

The general argument for this seems to be "black characters don't sell". Basically the companies say when they have a book/movie/show with an (original) black characters at the forefront, "general audiences" (whites) ignore it. So instead, they pull these stunts where they change the race of established characters. Dwayne McDuffie sort of touches on the subject here:



Personally, I think the Black Panther's film's performance should tell a very interesting story. I'm really curious to see how well it will do and who is going to come out and see it. It's a generally non-stereotype conforming story about an original black superhero who leads an advanced African civilization. Should be interesting to see how well it does given those parameters. When Black Panther is released, it will be put up or shut up time for a lot of folks, most of all whites who talk about how they dislike the race changing non-black characters and there should be movies focusing on original black characters instead.

:snopp: miles morales is a real Spider-Man he was written by marvel and is a popular character . For you to be against him means your against Spider-Man actually they wouldn't be using a random charcter as miles exists and the cac in you can go watch the 5 other spiderman movies .
