So uhh, what happens if they can’t get a majority vote?
Legal requirement for there to be a Speaker. They could play hardball and keep people in the room until they fold, or until enough people leave to lower the majority threshold he needs. Or maybe he comes crawling to democrats and offers concessions in order to pick up 6 votes. Or, democrats find a way to create their own coalition with 6 moderate republicans.

Can’t wait :banderas:

Tf we don’t do this with more positions :gucci:

A couple of things make this unique. First is that it isn't a publicly elected position. At its base level, it's an extra title for someone who was already elected to their position via vote.

Also, this is an unprecedented set of circumstances, because usually the party coming into power uses the nearly two months between the election and the first day of Congress to figure all this shyt out. So this actually happens quite often, but it happens behind closed doors, over the course of November and January. These obstinate fukks are just throwing a temper tantrum because they took some Ls they didn't like.

The Multiverse
The House has to have a Speaker, can’t govern without one. Either McCarthy folds or the holdouts fold…
But, what if literally no one folds?

Seems like a Constitutional crisis.

Should adjust the rules moving forward so that a plurality wins.

At the moment it’s a Republican crisis that they created. The longer this goes on the more it exposes Republicans as a dysfunctional body that can’t govern. If it literally becomes a stalemate, then dems would have to swoop in and save the country.
