Well, I kinda expected this. Just like the UK pressured Museveni to give reparations to the Asian Ugandans who had property and businesses expropriated by Idi Amin, they stepped up and put the pressure on Mnangagwa. Of course, they would never give reparations for the foul shyt they did in Africa not even 50 years ago.
Not great, but we need to think long term. $3.5B is a lot for a country not Zim but not a tremendous sum like Haiti got fukked with by France. They don't want to hurt Zim too bad. They wanted to send a message, to South Africa most of all that land reparations won't be tolerated by the "international community".
But they couldn't get too greedy since China is in the background and they want to slowly break that relationship and get their hands on the real prize--platinum. Like many wealthy farmers in the world, Zimbabwe's White farmers probably see their kids go work in other jobs or the US/UK/Canada. Long term that land could slowly filter back to Black Zimbabweans.
Zimbabwe needs to plan. Plan to get young Blacks into light manufacturing agriprocessing that can divert wealth from the farms to the Black population. In a developed economy, most of the value is extracted in higher value goods. If they plan and build right, the Whites can keep the farms and they can get Blacks into more lucrative sectors.
Yeah we got humiliated but worse, much worse, has happened. Zim can recover from this if they plan. Plan, plan, plan. It is the only thing that ever has worked and ever will work.
