The problem with Kobe is he is part of the generation that always jumped the gun on crowning n!ggas...If they would have waited until after the Boston series in '10 to introduce the comparissions then it probably wouldnt be ignored as much...But they got cized after the 80 point game against the Raptors and haven't looked back...
He will have his time (then Bron will eventually have his time)...
But we are part of the era where everything has to be immediatly quantified as classic...Breaking Bad the best TV show of all time, Dark Knight greatest movie of all time, Eminem greatest rapper of all time, Brady greatest QB of all time etc...
Nobody is patient enough to allow history to happen organically anymore...Kobe is a victim of that in some ways..
Bill Walton was the king of superlatives....
But also, there's a couple things with this as well...
There had not a been player like Michael Jordan before with the flash and charisma, Magic was flashy and charismatic but in a team dynamic sort of way. Jordan was a flashy individualistic player. Nike helped Jordan push the conversation more towards, "I'm a great player," not "I'm a great teammate"
Magic and Bird were great teammates on great teams, Jordan was a great player that had to become a great teammate in order to build a great team.
Another thing is that Nike helped Jordan become a cross culture phenom, Magic had Hollywood and the west coast locked down. Bird had the east coast and the white working class on lock. But Jordan had everyone because of his individual greatness, people loved to root for him because he was the underdog, getting beat by the Celtics, getting beat up by the Pistons. And basically it fell on his shoulders solely.
We think of the Bulls now the way we do because of Jordan and honestly, the Lakers had great teams before Kobe and they will after Kobe. The Bulls wouldn't have 6 championships without Jordan and Pippen to that extent.
Magic had 5 rings by the time Kobe was 9-10 years old, so Kobe never really had the weight of creating a dynasty, just the job of maintaining one. Kobe Bryant sits at the table with the all time greats and there's no disputing that, but it should be understood that Jordan is the one breaking the bread and passing it around to the rest.
