Black people have some of the highest levels of religosity out of any race....doesn't seem to be doing us much good.

Oh really? What makes your god any more believable than theirs? Just because you happened to be born into a culture/family that believed in Jehovah doesn't make your "brand" of religion the correct one.

Opressed people always have the highest levels of belief....seems kind of a contradiction but then again people would rather put their faith in a higher power then face those harsh realities :yeshrug:

Well on my fathers side they practiced traditional African spiritual systems, So I can only speak for the real blacks. :mjpls:. So while i understand many on here do not know their ancestrial roots thus have to go with what they feel most comfortable with, i can speak for my family at least which is from a Mande tribe (noting that many AAs come from Mande tribes), with my fathers side practicing traditional African spiritual systems, and my moms side being historically Islamic until chrisitian missionaries came. And even then Africans throughout the dispora mesh traditional african spiritual systems with abrahamic religions, just look at New Orleans and Haiti .

Whether praising another human, a "god," a rock, the sun, nature (as in science), or a tree, "African spiritual system" was not an organized movement throughout Africa
If you went to different communities, tribes, and societies you would get a variation and great differences of that "spirituality"
I mention human belief because if you accept that black folks are the original people of the earth, then at some point not all black folks believed in a higher being since Islam and Christianity has a beginning
So that suggest "religion" was not the default source of guidance for all of man, but we want to make it so now

You do understand africa is a huge continent with a hugely diverse population right? Why are you expecting a north African to have the same way of life and beliefs as a south african? Are you this dense? Just say you hate islam and christianity and keep it moving, you are not here to prove there is no creator because you can not prove that one exists nor does not exist. Any man who says they can prove or disprove the notion of a creator is an idiot.

Talk about the size of Africa, after you used a generic term like "African Spiritual system", as proof of how ALL black ancestors practiced and interpreted religion brehs
smh. This is why religious talks lead no where. Folks get emotional, start being unnecessarily dismissive, start interpreting things and injecting points from convos they had with other people, while ignoring the points made now and not addressing any of them

Source on the Nat Turner thing?

The original source is The Confessions of Nat Turner, but here's an article on NPR with some information.

As a child, Nat displayed a keen intelligence and was encouraged by his owner, Benjamin Turner, to read and study the Bible. According to Nat's version of his life story, both blacks and whites, as well as his mother, Nancy, recognized from his earliest years that Nat Turner was "intended for some great purpose," certain that one day he would be a prophet. (His father, it is believed, successfully escaped from his owners and slavery when Nat was very young; his name is unknown.) Nat studied the Old Testament, committing long passages to memory and heeding the words of the prophets. Working in the fields, he heard a voice call to him and became convinced that he had been chosen to carry out a divine mission. As he later recalled, "Having soon discovered to be great, I must appear so." He cloaked himself in mystery, avoided fraternizing, abstained from alcohol, and devoted long periods to fasting. In cabins, fields and hush harbors (secluded parts of plantations where slaves would gather to worship out of sight of their masters), he began to exhort his fellow slaves, promising them that something big would happen one day.

Then came the visions: black and white spirits engaged in battle; the Savior with arms outstretched; drops of blood on corn; leaves with hieroglyphic characters and numbers. Finally he understood the meaning of the signs: "The Savior was about to lay down the yoke he had borne for the sins of men, and the great day of judgment was at hand." It was just a matter of time.

In 1826 or 1827, Turner selected 20 trusted men. In May 1828, he experienced a vision of a serpent. In February 1831, he witnessed an eclipse of the sun. Then on Aug. 13, 1831, the final signal was revealed to him: a second "black spot" on the sun. He told his followers, "As the black spot passed over the sun, so shall the blacks pass over the earth."

Yo imma just ask (state) this here:
If you don't believe Jesus is your savior you go to hell right? If you don't live right by Allah you go to hell right? If you don't live right by the Hindu god you go to their hell. Etc etc

I just came to say the bolded isn't true. For most part it's only the Abrahamic religions which have this concept of eternal damnation for lack of belief.

I'm really astounded by the continued ignorance on this board about Atheism. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in God.....nothing more.....nothing less. Some Atheists might attempt to add more to it's definition....but that's all it is. Also Atheism isn't some European invention...hell there's an ancient school of Hindu thought that's Atheist.
