What does this even mean?
I dont think ive ever went out of my way to "embrace my blackness"...I was born black.
are u mixed? if not then u dont see where im coming from....mixed ppl in the business either flat out say wat they believe they identify most with (halle says she's a black woman, alicia keys says she's a black woman, mariah carey says she's mixed and so on and so forth)...i've nvr seen rashida really speak out about anything like that and she ALWAYS has a white bf or husband in movies (even all her bf's on parks & recs were white men even tho they called her mixed sometimes)...even her little porn doc was only on white girls in the industry. I'm not saying she doesnt back blacks or anything but she has been considered a white woman in hollywood for the most part and hasnt done much to change any of that

I understand where they're coming from, that "be black when it's convenient" shyt is wack. Kinda like Wayne Brady all up in black shows, award shows, etc when his career wasn't popping yet when he was an a-lister it was :mjpls:

How is this convenient for her? What does she stand to gain by making an R&B/Hip Hop sounding tribute to the 90's?

I don't really like Wayne Brady either, but him being all up in black shows, awards etc. is because they ask him to host them. I think Wayne Brady is dull, corny, and one of the most unfunny comedians ever, but it seems after he started hosting that game show, he started getting all these hosting gigs. It's the same way they had Wendy Williams hosting the Soul Train Awards knowing full well she's said some nasty things about almost everybody there. But because she's the host of a successful talk show, she's hosting shows and other hosting opportunities opened up.

He did not start accepting these asks until he was not longer an a-lister in mainstream Hollywood, what don't you get about that? You think they didn't ask when hew as hot in 99? Nah, all of a suddenly in 2012 he makes himself available when there was no one else knocking.

What does she stand to gain? A new audience in the black folks she previously dismissed, and a way to leverage her existing audience by giving them urban sounds in a package they're used to and comfortable with.

When was Wayne Brady ever an A-Lister in Hollywood? A-Lister in Hollywood is like Will Smith status and he was never that.

She stands to gain a new audience in Black folks? You know how crazy that sounds. You really think people are going to watch this video and automatically warm up to her. She'd be stupid to think you could make an R&B record that sounds like that and gain a new audience within the black community. Tell me the last song you heard on an R&B station that sounded like this that actually took off. Why exactly would she choose a dated sound like that and not opt for something that actually sounds like it could be a hit?

I appreciate the spirit and they've got the clothes down, but the production values are very current. The production values are what made the 90's the 90's. Their shyt looks to slick and glossy.

Oh and won't no damn flip phones in the 90's.

Not necessarily lost, but if you don't identify as black, represent any aspect of black culture, and even look white.....then you're not black lol.

I mean she's a white woman to me. Which is fine. I like white women lol. But why even bring up her being half black in the first place?
No she's mixed, and who are you to say she doesn't id as mixed....do you know her personally?

I agree with he part about people saying she's embracing her Blackness with this video/music. I don't think this is an instance of her doing this for some kind of co-sign or to authenticate herself as an R&B artist though. I don't get the Pink comparison because Pink came out and was marketing as an R&B artist and made R&B songs. By the next album, she completely switched her sound and never looked back.

She's pandering to a Black audience like Pink did. I can't believe you don't see that. Since when has Rashida had anything to do with the Black community? Remember that interview she dd when the reporter referred to her being a little more tan & she called herself looking more "ethnic"? She has clear issues with her Blackness & this video sickens me because she done her damnedest to distance herself from anything Black.

How is this pandering? By nature, she comes from a musical background via her father who has produced some of the greatest Black music ever. I'm not sure how you can pander to something that's a part of your DNA.

^^^ If I'm not mistaken, that's Rashida on the vocals to this.

She hasn't distanced her from anything Black. This video and a few movies is possibly all a lot of you ever seen. If you've seen Boston Public or the Tracy Morgan movie with Bruce Willis, you'd know she didn't distance herself from anything Black.

You're :cape: real hard for her when she's done nothing but Tiger Woods herself from anything Black. Most would agree with that but for some reason you don't wanna acknowledge or see if for what it is :mjpls:

Her voice sounds good

I'm surprised

but it sounds dated af ... in a sort of good way

I lived throughout the 90's but someone remind me of what videos are represented.

I only cape for the truth. I don't like making assumptions about people or hate somebody simply because they aren't what I would like them to be. Furthermore, and what I really take issue with, is the whole dissing somebody and using race as a scapegoat. It's saying "I don't like her" and then disguising it with "she's not Black and she's using a video to conveniently get back in good with the Black community" on some :troll:. Especially since people went out of their way to bring it up when it's completely irrelevant.
