And that has literally nothing to do with cultural influence. What has South Africa put forth that compares to the global impact of just Nollywood and Afrobeats? Which South African writers have had the impact of Achebe, Soyinka or even someone contemporary like Chimamanda Adichie? Culturally speaking, the only thing they've done that's had a real global impact is amapiano, but even then it was Nigerians who actually made it popular in the US.

Straight up, the only black countries/communities comparable to Nigeria in terms of culture are Jamaicans, Brazilians and African Americans who are at the top obviously.

SA has contributed to global political conversations around human rights. Nigeria has not produced the equivalent.

SA literature - A Long Walk to Freedom, Kaffir Boy, Cry The Beloved Country, Tsotsi...I was reading in highschool.

Yesterday and uCarmen eKhayetlitsha were big international movies and were big when Nollywood was producing the equivalent of chitlin circuit grade movies. Nollywood hasn't yet to produce international films that are equivalent.

Egypt is above Nigeria.
And I would say South Africa too with what they've contributed in the realm of global human rights - Freedom Fighters, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu. Nigeria doesn't have an equivalent. Nigeria's influence is in soft culture not high culture.
culture, is culture.

China doesn’t have cultural exports on par with…even Nigeria. :stopitslime: me:

Nollywood also has no equivalent, Yemaya, Oshun and the religion of IFA, have no equivalents in West/Central Africa also.

Imani, Jabari, Ayana, are Arabic names via Swahili, which also contains Arabic, but Tanzania doesn't have huge influence outside of that.

Kenya does but not as much as other West African countries(Mali, Ghana, Nigeria), the reason certain West African countries have more influence really is because of the peoples taking to the new world, i would have Kenya in a tier below Ethiopia overall, Ethiopia should probably be in the first tier also.
Yep. On movies alone, the only place that comes close is India.

They've also been riding the backs of South Africa's Amapiano scene. Another reason why I put SA above them.

Plus the Zulu mythology is >>>> Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa. I wouldn't even be able to name a king or chief from one of those tribes.
yall are complicating this. You can be first among equals. Nigerians are among the wealthiest expats of all africans.

Religion, the Yoruba religions are reall the only indigeinous African religions, oiutside of Egypt that have had any big infulence in the new world, Yemaya, Oshun etc you have practitioners in Brazil, Trinidad, America, Cuba etc.

Most religions have a Afro Asiatic roots but in modern times, the other countries have had influence on religion via religions imported from other regions like Mali.

Since Fela Kuti, music also.

Also by far the biggest film industry in Africa via Nollywood, with Suth Africa being a close second.

Yemaya, Oshun and the religion of IFA, have no equivalents in West/Central Africa also

Vodun comes from Benin though. Papa Legba
Legba, Eleggua carries over even into African American culture. Even influencing the blues.

SA music scene is basically just House.

That's like saying Afrobeats is repackaged R&B, Jazz, and funk. :pachaha:

South Africa's global cultural relevancy has waned since the early 1990s. Sure, Amapiano is popular in Africa now...but it is an outlier and compared to the 1980s and early 1990s, when people were listening to Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Lucky Dube...South Africa's cultural decline has continued relative to Nigeria.

And I say this as someone who likes Amapiano, gqom etc.

Because you don’t know the culture, Igbos are socialist in antiquity. We don’t acknowledge monarchs.

Also our cosmology isn’t like Yoruba ppl (ifa), we keep our shyt hush hush and on the low.

List is very on point. Except I think Egypt is living off a legacy that is ancient. they are S tier on world stage in general but as far as modern day influence I don't see it. All past glory. Ethiopia has way more modern cultural influences.

Why are y’all boiling cultural influence down to music? And if this is looking at global influence, some of y’all are just looking at influence within the black diaspora, and more specifically America. These countries have various levels of influence throughout Europe, the Middle East, some parts of Asia, and South America. The narrow lens being applied in this thread seems to forget pretty much anything you’re not particularly attuned to
