Hook is mos def better but it can be extremely painful until you get used to it.
I never use straps. Damned unsporting if you ask me.
Any weight over 4 wheels is usually when I switch to hook. Hook grip is also safer for your biceps tendons than supinating, although I usually do both for anything over 95% conventional (sumo is different).
I usually pronate my grip but it be fukkin up my shins
Im almost done with my back but now im debating if i wanna go "comandeer" a squat rack and try this all over again. Its hard as fukk to get my middle finger over my thumb tho but we gon see
