It’s become popular for viral tweets this week to claim the media is “ignoring” the derailment, or “barely” covering it. And while this is a subjective claim, a better way to look at it is not a blackout of coverage—it’s a wholesale de-politicization of the coverage. Segments covering the disaster largely repeat state officials, local governments and Norfolk Southern’s dubious “everything is under control” statements. This coverage handwrings, but then moves on, without any mention of political factors that made the disaster more likely: decades of union busting and safety regulation gutting, the predictable failure of transportation regulators, and corporate cost-cutting.

The Ohio derailment is treated like an act of god, following the formula of tornados or earthquake reporting. But, as smaller outlets such The Lever, New Republic, The Guardian, Grist, More Perfect, and many others have been pointing out this is very much a political issue with political solutions in need of political accountability.

By way of comparison, MSNBC ran over 40 separate segments on the “Chinese spy balloon” media crisis that unfolded during roughly the same time period. Just the same, ABC’s This Week had 59 mentions of the spy balloon in its February 5 and 12 broadcasts. NBC’s Meet the Press had 57, and CBS’s Face the Nation had 47.

The crash has been largely covered. To the point that if you type in Palestine in Google you’ll get top news hits if East Palestine Ohio and not of the Middle East.

The idea that the coverage should be politicized over covering the effect it’s having on people just seems like leftist fantasy.

Nah, it should be politicized because this states the cause and what can be done to prevent this on the future. When you had rail union workers saying the short staffing has lead to this, that should start leading down a road of questions.

But I guess another day of thoughts and prayers from the media and politicians will suffice, along with $50 $5 each person in that town.

It's crazy how liberals have shifted from in the 70s constantly challenging governments and questioning official stories to demonising anyone who questions anything about government institutions as conspiracy theorists.

This story and the recent German pipeline revelations are perfect examples of that. Just a total lack of accountability in government institutions and they've weaponized fringe alt-right conspiracy culture as a way to supress any criticism or questioning the government's actions.

A sad state of affairs.

I think she did a good job of pointing out the valid arguments and the stuff that's more of a reach. She started with most of the stuff that's getting out over the skis, but brought it back to the underlying issues by the close. I found skepchick when she was debunking covid lies, but she's been pretty consistently good on a lot of this stuff from the skeptic but left-leaning POV so far.
