so there is no way for them to maintain their property without the government footing the bill? how about the govt buying the railroads from them then and charging them usage fees.
They almost certainly could change the regulations, but these types of administrative changes seem to get rolled back with the change of administration.

Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it when you’re in power, but we know the drill. Hence why we’re here according some theories being pushed.

I’m of the belief that outside of massive commuter derailments won’t much be done for a lasting change. But that’s my view on most things these days :hubie:

That’s just going to lead to more subsidies for private businesses. The same folks calling for increased rail standards are also opposed to the government footing the bill for private corporations to profit.

These are massively profitable companies. The company involved in this incident spent $10 billion on stock buybacks last year. Why is the assumption that they can't maintain their infrastructure without subsidies? The regulations can be put in place and if they can't meet the standards they should be nationalized, only because they are necessary to maintain our system.

Of course they’re profitable. And they already do pay for the upkeep of these lines — that’s one of the main purposes of the privatization of rails throughout the world. Remove the burden from taxpayers.

But if the concern is a massive overhaul of rail lines then you’re going to talk about public funds being used. That’s the carrot and the stick and the way these things tend to go in America @chico25 :manny:

They clearly aren't investing in maintaining the lines based on the picture of tracks in this thread and over 1000 trains derailed per year. Taxpayers are going to end up paying for this clean up and overhauling the lines. The infrastructure bill was for that exact purpose, so why is the private company needed in this operation.

Things are done with private business and sold based on the talking point you used but in reality companies cut corners to maximize profits and we end up with worse outcomes. We need to change the way we do things as a country because they are clearly not working.

I think a lot of assumptions are being made here and sometimes we should take a moment to see if someone is posting something to craft a narrative.

This is the railway from the video.
