Let's take a look at our safeties.
Talanoa Hufunga - 2nd year safety drafted in 6th round, looking like the steal of last years draft. While not an amazing athlete, he is what I like to call a downhill tackler, as he seems not to tackle as much as he goes through opposing offenses. If he gets a headful of steam he hits hard and decisively. While he doesn't have soft hands for interceptions he always seems to be where the ball is and has made key special teams plays as a rookie. If he can work on his hands he has top 10 potential, imo.

George Odum - Veteran Safety from the Colts, I don't think this pick up gets talked about enough he's a sure tackler, solid in coverage, he can play the strong role or free role. He can sub in the slot, he can do a little bit of everything and we got him at a very reasonable price.

Jimmy Ward - 2014 2nd draft pick and one of the last holdovers of the Trent Baalke era. Ward has been a talented if injury prone safety. He starts this season on injured reserve as we speak. When healthy he has emerged as one of the leagues better safeties and a stalwart of the defense. While I only think he has a couple of seasons of starter level play left. He is a favorite of the coaching staff and has been a very solid part of this defense especially the past 3 seasons.

Dontae Johnson - After being drafted in the 4th round, he has been an and off the team. At this point he's primarily a good reserve corner/safety to have just in case on the practice squad. But if he gets any significant snaps, we're in trouble as it means we are down to the last safeties on the team.

Taylor Hawkins - San Diego state safety. He is going to be a developmental prospect. He has ideal size at 6'1 205. He also has good speed running a 4.53 40 time. He is noted to be smart player on and off the field. But he has issue tackling which is a no-no in out defense and while he had a few defended passes and in INT his senior year, he also has gotten burned a few times. Despite this with Jaquaski Tartt gone, he can develop into a special teams player with his good speed and develop into an emergency safety.

Unit Analysis:
When healthy this is a solid unit, while most of these guys are more better in run support and tackling as opposed to pure coverage, it hasn't really hurt the defense as a whole save a few moments here and there. This is another position by committee as the top 3 guys will see action in different packages and as needed. I don't know if it is a strength per se, but it's not a liability either. I will say the depth beyond the starters is shaky and as much as it pains me to say it, bringing Tartt isn't the worst of ideas as he's still better than Johnson or Hawkins.
