Let's take a look at our safeties.

Talanoa Hufunga - 2nd year safety drafted in 6th round, looking like the steal of last years draft. While not an amazing athlete, he is what I like to call a downhill tackler, as he seems not to tackle as much as he goes through opposing offenses. If he gets a headful of steam he hits hard and decisively. While he doesn't have soft hands for interceptions he always seems to be where the ball is and has made key special teams plays as a rookie. If he can work on his hands he has top 10 potential, imo.

Performance - B-
Potential: B+
Overall: B

George Odum - Veteran Safety from the Colts, I don't think this pick up gets talked about enough he's a sure tackler, solid in coverage, he can play the strong role or free role. He can sub in the slot, he can do a little bit of everything and we got him at a very reasonable price.

Performance: B
Potential: B
Overall: B

Jimmy Ward - 2014 2nd draft pick and one of the last holdovers of the Trent Baalke era. Ward has been a talented if injury prone safety. He starts this season on injured reserve as we speak. When healthy he has emerged as one of the leagues better safeties and a stalwart of the defense. While I only think he has a couple of seasons of starter level play left. He is a favorite of the coaching staff and has been a very solid part of this defense especially the past 3 seasons.

Performance: B
Potential: C+
Overall: B-

Dontae Johnson - After being drafted in the 4th round, he has been an and off the team. At this point he's primarily a good reserve corner/safety to have just in case on the practice squad. But if he gets any significant snaps, we're in trouble as it means we are down to the last safeties on the team.

Performance: D
Potential: D
Overall: D

Taylor Hawkins - San Diego state safety. He is going to be a developmental prospect. He has ideal size at 6'1 205. He also has good speed running a 4.53 40 time. He is noted to be smart player on and off the field. But he has issue tackling which is a no-no in out defense and while he had a few defended passes and in INT his senior year, he also has gotten burned a few times. Despite this with Jaquaski Tartt gone, he can develop into a special teams player with his good speed and develop into an emergency safety.

Performance: D
Potential: C-
Overall: D+

Unit Analysis:

When healthy this is a solid unit, while most of these guys are more better in run support and tackling as opposed to pure coverage, it hasn't really hurt the defense as a whole save a few moments here and there. This is another position by committee as the top 3 guys will see action in different packages and as needed. I don't know if it is a strength per se, but it's not a liability either. I will say the depth beyond the starters is shaky and as much as it pains me to say it, bringing Tartt isn't the worst of ideas as he's still better than Johnson or Hawkins.

Special Teams

Taybor Pepper - Veteran long snapper. He's been a long snapper a long time and does for under 1 million a year

Grade: B-

Mitch Wishnowsky - 4th year punter, started since his rookie year. He has a boot for leg and launch the ball to the back of the endzone. His punts can sometimes land near the endzone setting us up for great field position other times it sails past it for a touchback essentially making it useless. With that said he's dead average. Not good, not bad, just there. We could extend him for next to nothing, or we can find another punter in UDFA, which is what we should have done from the start, that pick could have easily been used for a lineman or cornerback. Never draft punters/kickers any round before 6.

Grade: C

Robbie Gould - Despite being in this 18th NFL Season. Robbie Gould is still one of the best kickers in the NFL. He's is accurate from with 50 yards and he has the boot still to make most goals from 55 yards or more, though that isn't too often. He should still be good for another couple of years.

Grade: B+

Unit Analysis: Outside of Robbie Gould our specials teams last year was below average until about week 15 or 16 where it improved and made some big plays. Special teams can dictate close games and I expect it to be better and more consistent especially with the speed added in punt/kick coverage and the addition of Ray Ray McCloud on returns. Well at least on paper.

Wtf did he do wrong? He went from hero to zero over night :mjlol:

I know Womack looks legit. I still think Thomas gets some burn. Unfortunately injuries happen a lot with the Niners.

I still think the Niners run the ball well even with the interior shaky. :yeshrug: But damn lets give them a chance first to before thinking it's scary. :pachaha:Gotta get the chemistry going.
Exactly with all the damn injuries of the pst I have no doubt Thomas will see the field and if he doesn’t that means 1 of 2 things either guys stay healthy or they’re playing well enough to keep their spots

All this fake energy, the Bears are still the Bears. We'll beat them like we always do. I'm not saying Justin Fields won't make some big plays but he's going to be tested by our front 7 and there's nothing telling me that their offensive line is so much better than last year.
:whoa: I still have nightmares about this

:heh: so basically it looks like Lenoir will be on the streets by next year. Verrett is so solid, just can't stay healthy, he looked like a top tier corner most of the time when he was healthy.
I'm not sure what's their vision of Lenoir in the future. He played strictly slot last year. Now they put him on outside too a bit.

He should be Womacks backup but I really don't know if he actually is.
