Hip-hop may have been the #1 genre, but that doesn't necessarily mean people were playing new artists' music, does it mention if that was only newer artists' music?
Nicki Minaj I know put up a lot of numbers this year for example. I think legacy artists are basically carrying the game right now and the last few years.
I think the more telling metric was how long it took for it to get a #1 on the chart and how many #1's the genre had.
Those numbers most likely aren't as lopsided as they were back in 2017.
This is coming from someone who actually doesn't mind Ice Spice and thinks she's not as much a problem as these newer artists who are absolutely copycats of the same old shyt - they like generic NBA bench/role players.
There's a reason why the most anticipated album - Metro and Future's project are by people who debuted over 10 years ago. These new artists ain't it.
The number for 2017 is more lopsided because more legacy acts dropped in 2017 than 2023. Legacy carried hip hop in 2017 just like now. Here are all the #1 albums in 2017.
Migos #1
Big Sean #1 (legacy) I decided - 4th album
Future 2 #1 - 5th and 6th album - Future and Hndrxx
Drake - More life - legacy
Kendrick Lamar - Damn - legacy
Logic - 3rd album
DJ Khaled
Jay-Z - #1
NF - #1 (Christian rap)
Eminem - Revival
Most were legacy/well established artist. Migos and NF (Christian rapper) are probably the only 2 artist that had a #1 album who had less than 3 albums. Drake, Future, Jay-z, Big Sean, Kendrick and Eminem all dropped that year.
List of artist with #1s in 2023.
Lil Uzi
Travis Scott
Rob Wave
Drake
Nicki Minaj
No album from Cole, Kendrick, Kanye, 21, Future, etc dropped in 2023. Gunna would had a #1 album (debut at #3) if the fans didn't consider him a snitch. Gunna had a #1 album in 2022 and have a bigger hit on his 2023 album. Thugga would had a #1 (debut at #2) if he wasn't in jail. Other acts were high on billboard in 2023 like NF at #2, Durk at #3, Yeat at #4 and Young boy at #5 and #4. A lot of legacy/established acts dropped in 2022 (Future, Kendrick, Drake and 21, Pusha, Khaled, Metro Boomin) so they had no reason to dropped in 2022.
My main question is why everyone is purposely ignoring that 2023 is not like any other year on the billboard charts. There never been a artist in recent history that have the popularity of Taylor Swift that released a new album in late 2022 and then re-recorded and re-released 2 of their most popular albums in 2023 while going on a #1 tour and have a #1 box office movie. Taylor basically had 3 albums on the billboard chart for the entire 2023. I would think a lot of artist would had a higher debut or sold more if they didn't have to deal with 3 Taylor swift albums on the chart.
