This is where you’re wrong. If it didn’t mean anything nobody would be mad about it, especially since other award shows we used to deem important we don’t care about anymore. The Soul Train Award used to be the Grammy. Now it’s a tape delayed show that nobody watches (even though it’s a really good show). It’s really tough to throw that high level of validation away when you don’t have anything to replace it with.
