One of president Phil Jackson’s big decisions this season is whether to trade J.R. Smith, and the club had recent conversations with the Pacers regarding ex-Knick Chris Copeland, according to a league source.

The 6-foot-9 Copeland, whom the Pacers signed in July 2013, has an expiring contract after bolting the Knicks for a two-year, $6 million deal, so he wouldn’t affect their 2015 cap space.

Smith, meanwhile, can opt out of the $6.4 million he has coming in 2015-16, but there’s still a chance he will wait to be a free agent until 2016 when the salary cap is expected to rise dramatically. The Knicks are trying to open up as much cap space as possible and would benefit if Smith opts out or if they trade him for an expiring contract.

Hold up...trade JR for Chris Copeland?

I love Cope but nah... especially since Cleanthony can be developed to do what Cope provides.

I just do it to get rid of JR. He's too wildly inconsistent on both ends of the floor for me to believe in him. Rather see Timmy get those minutes I don't care if he's a bad defender best way to practice is real games anyway and his chucking habits probably came from JR too

Who cares who it's for, it's JR for an expiring deal, I do it everyday

As if Amare hasnt robbed the Knicks enough these past 5 years and ypu want to give him 10M next year
I hate when Knicks fans say shyt like this. You want to get on Amare for things like his defense or being a ball stopper, no arguments from me, but he didn't tell Dolan or Walsh to offer that contract. No one would turn down that deal and the fact is whenever he can be on the court , he is (:deadrose::sas2:). From all accounts, no one works harder than dude. He changed his style of play up and look at all the random shyt his does to try and stay healthy. I'm sure no one is more frustrated with those knees than Amare himself.

When dude plays, he produces, and this season he's actually bought into the system. He's been passing the ball more (probably more than I've ever seen) and his defense looks better too. I don't know about 10 mil, but I'd take him back for 6-7 mil if he manages to stay healthy this season

This.

I'm sorry about the 10mill statement, I was mainly thinking that 10mil will be the new 7 mill considering the TV Deal. BY no means am I insinuating that Stat deserves top dollar...

He puts in 110%, he buys in & he's trying to win. I wouldn't mind him retiring a Knick. I wouldn't mind him being a role player on a History making Championship Knick team.

:wow:

I know I'm going to get flak for it.

And I am probably speaking from anow emotional place but...

How much is a very productive role player going to be worth considering the new TV deal and higher cap?

How much do you think Stat should make next year, on any team?

I'm thinking about it, had he really robbed the knicks? It did Previous knicks management basically dtop 100 mill on his lap?

He had actually twitted putting 110% in.
I don't think any team is gonna offer Amare double digits mils next year, and he def wont get more than a 1 year deal unless the second year is a team option. I'm sure his first preference is to play with a playoff team too since he doesnt know how much longer his knees will hold up. I only see 5 maybe 6 teams that he'll end up on (including us)

fukk outta here with trading JR. He's a better passer, rebounder, playmaker, and scorer than Timmy. And trading him for Copeland? Why?:why:
I'm not against trading JR, but for Copeland? :camby:. Phil's been doing a good job, but trading talent just to move salary is a terrible idea.

Tbh, with the money some of these guys got in the offseason, if JR stays playing the way he has, I'd be happy if he opted in:manny:

Cap Room

Phil is getting a Big 3 next year and use the bird rights to go over the Tax threshold to keep Shumpert and Larkin
If he wants another big 3 there's no way he can keep Shump and Larkin. He'd have to renounce their bird rights, or else they'd have cap holds which take away from the available cap space.

Actually, I don't see anyway he can form another big 3 with Calderon's 7 mil on the books. He could prob get 1 max and another player around 10-11 mil.

Well doesn't it depend on how the cap goes up ? Plus one big player this and then maybe one in 2016. But let's say shump lives up to his potential in the triangle then we may need less help than we think

If Shump lives up to his potential(I can't believe I'm still saying this for Shump yet again) & Timmy keeps developing(which it seems he is) then I'm content w/ our 2 guard spot.
