These dudes are revising history. Even 2Pac who was coming out the Bay threw shots at Hammer in his first interview with Davey D and that clip that just came out.

Hammer was looked at as a sellout who was watering down the culture by a lot of people. All this talk now of his gangsterism or him putting his people on didn’t exist back than.
I think it depends on the time frame being talked about. Like for that first album I don't think anybody was really hating on Hammer like that and a lot of people fukked with him. It wasn't until Can't Touch This dropped and then all the commercials and him popping up everywhere that hip-hop really turned on Hammer and started all the corny and sell out talk.

That’s how I remember it too.

This thread made me revisit their music. Its dope but fukk the skits lol.

I will check out Serch's album. To me hes a classic 80s MC, not a goat exactly but he had skills and made some dope records.

If some shyt comes to light I'll happily condemn Serch but so far IDK what to think. If you read this thread start to finish this guy has a mythology that is gonna far outlive him.

Pete's album beats Serch's in every category but the guests.

I mean Serch is dropping a new album, maybe why he dissing Pete again.

Serch's first solo was weak from what i remember.
Oh, he has a new album? It could be listenable if the beats are good. What will he talk about, though. I would hope it's not disses, that would probably be extra trash in 2023.

Hammer was dissing Run-DMC and LL on Let's Get It Started, most of NYC was on his helmet, 3rd Bass just did it flagrantly on video. If he wasn't dissing, he would have been clowned for wackness, but they probably would have let him dance for chicken in peace until he fell off.

Hammer was one dancing ass nikka :wow:

Hammer was dissed back then, actually hated on because he became too popular.

Once he became too popular they said he sold out and was too commercial.

When he first came out, he wasn't dissed or hated on. It's when he became too big when the criticism started.
I could be wrong but hammer was the first rapper or one of the first that made real commercials for large corporations. Plus that whole thing with 100 dancers was weird to a lot of people. Hammer didn't fit into any hip hop aesthetic of the time

The famous tribe line was " rap is not pop if you call it that then stop"

I think looking back I can see how the racial aspect can be looked at but 3rd bass was saying what a lot of people were already saying.

Also looking back his showmanship was connected more to James brown and Earth Wind and Fire type of showmanship

Fat Boys had commercials and movies, before Hammer. They were practically done as a group by the time Hammer came around. Run DMC did rock songs, had movies.

Hammer was always viewed as corny, but people left him alone. It wasn't him gaining fame, it was moreso when he was viewed as THE penultimate rap artist and he started dissing that others came at his head. He and Vanilla Ice were virtually the same...only the other was white.
