dude Serch USED Doom's death to get a podcast run

he was working with Kane doing this major audio production then jumped all over the DOOM story that part is 100% true. Search also has a history full of lies.
I was in the city when he hosted radio in Detroit, he definitely told some lies, plus he flat out ran off with someone's money to host a superbowl party.

He was cool as a host though. They used to freestyle every morning. Proof was a frequent guest and the morning show was definitely more hip hop oriented.

Only 3rd bass song I ever dug was Brooklyn Queens and that was because of the production.

Sear is a better host though. :pachaha:

I didn't know the extent of the DOOM thing. I remember Serch doing another big interview where he talked about his podcast plans, making a more immersive one (NY street sounds, weather sounds, etc) with interviews and narration. But I didn't know that he dipped on Kane to do a DOOM one, presumably after his death. I remember him saying he wanted to do a DOOM one, when he was on Questlove's podcast.

Making a podcast about someone's life is fine. But given that Serch and DOOM weren't on speaking terms after the falling out, and IIRC they never spoke after Zen Love X became "DOOM" n the late 90s...I don't feel comfortable with this news.

You never heard this one? I assume they were cool.

The infighting never looks cool between old heads. I appreciate 3rd Bass, 2 dope albums in classic old school style, but they can just leave it at that without the stupid squabbling. Its annoying when artists don't even have respect for their own legacy.

Also Serch is finally dropping an album, which is dope. I never understood why he didn't keep his career going, even though his debut flopped. Tbf, Pete Nice album had better beats, but both are very forgettable.

You know your stuff. Would you say Pete's debut was better than Search's (minus him putting the GOAT on his record) ? I always felt Nice's album was more solid than Return of the Product

I prefer Serch's album personally but Pete's is surprisingly good. I didn't really have expectations for it tbh and it surprised me.

Dante Ross also pushed back on some of Serch's comments on Math's show.

Ross also pushed back on the idea that Serch A&R'd Illmatic last month, @Ziggiy

Serch exec produced the album but I think most people would probably say Faith Newman and Large Pro were the A&Rs on that album right. That being said, Serch def helped get beats for the album and Premo confirmed it.

Search didnt put mf doom on, kmd and 3rd bass were cool with each other but 3rd bass just ended up blowing up more. i dont remember the timeline of the peach fuzz video, but in the ny underground pov they were just one big crew

also search did the video benetton with kurious and mf doom, i never heard there was a fallout but im guessing they patched it up for the video

Did Serch ever say he A&R’d the album or just that he executive produced and helped get Nas his initial deal?

I don’t think i’ve ever heard Serch say he A&R’d the album in a traditional sense. Every NYC producer worth their salt already wanted to work with Nas. From what I read it was Large Pro who took Nas to meet with Q-Tip and Pete Rock. LES was already Nas’s homie. Large Pro was already in the fold and DJ Premier & Nas already knew each other.

By Serch’s word, he made sure all the paperwork was right. That the publishing was right. The sample clearances. Etc. I remember him telling a story about falling out with Pete Rock because Pete Rock’s brother wanted to be paid by a certain date and Serch said his grandmother passed and Pete’s brother was like “fukk all that! We want the money NOW!”

I've never heard Serch himself say it, but I've heard people accuse him of saying it. Not just Dante Ross. I'm not sure whether it's just that dude is a jerk or whatever and people don't like giving him credit, but technically he did a lot of A&R stuff for the album as you said. And it's been acknowledged by people who were there (Premo, Nas etc). Large Pro also had the connects and got various people ready to work on the album, and Faith Newman did too. I've heard just about everyone involved give Faith her flowers for this and her and Nas are still friends/homies.

I'll listen to the full Serch interview with Math this week. It's pretty long (two parts) so I'm sure there's Nas stuff in there beyond the shorter clips that were released already.

For anyone's that been around long enough to remember, Serch has always been known to be a liar and mad shady on the business side of things.

O.C. and Nas had issues with him early on in their careers because he was taking money that should've gone to them. Russell Simmons had issues with Serch for trying to do sneaky sh*t with contracts, when Serch was working on starting his own management company. He's tried to use DOOM to get deals and shows, without DOOM's knowledge or permission. People have chased him out of the Def Jam offices for trying to snake them. All kinds of sh*t. Large Professor went up to a label looking for Serch too, and Serch ran out the back, lol.

I loved 3rd Bass. The Cactus Album was the second album I bought with my own money, as a kid. When they broke up, I supported both of their solos because I was always around the dudes who worked on the tracks for both. And even back then, the word has always been that Serch is a liar and can't be trusted. Now here we are, in damn near 2023, same story with dude. Sh*t is wild.

Math's podcast needs some work. It started off mad strong, and lately, it's kinda turned into a spot where people just go up there for drama or to lie. It used to be mad reputable. They need to fix that.

I watched the first two parts and whats in there about Nas is pretty much whats in the clips. The rest of it is Serch talking about the beginnings of his career and how his parents schooled him early on about knowing the business. He goes into why he and Pete separated and what went down in Detroit when Trick declared a No Fly Zone. He also says he witnessed Yung Berg get beat up and his chain snatched.

He also said that when Nas performed at the Grammys his streams went up higher than most artists who actually won.

I don't like either of those kkkrkers. NY let 2 white boys come in and talk shyt about a black man (Hammer) that was employing the hood and providing for his community. NY fukked up with that one.

Serch and Doom never had beef.. after subroc died and KMD got dropped, Doom got depressed and started hanging with the “wrong crowd” while Serch was still in the industry making music and making business moves for cats like Nas. I think Serch was also trying to get off drugs at that time while the same “wrong crowd” was allegedly enabling Doom to start the alcohol habit that helped do him in 25+ years later.. they just drifted apart, Doom would do a song with a wack rapper before working with someone he didn’t fukk wit..

Where did you hear that alcohol was what killed Doom? Its could be part of it because he was a big drinker but I thought they never confirmed the cause publicly? I read it was suicide, after his son died he spiralled.

Its tragic. Theres only been a few celebrities that died where it hit me like I lost a friend. He was one of them.
